  • At a Crossroads

    Open Access•Madira Thetso•ARTICLE•E-Journal of Humanities Arts and…•2025

Taboos are prohibitions that are made to guard individuals and communities against danger and risk. Taboos are structured into two parts: the prohibited action and a consequence associated with non-observance. The prohibition serves as a command, while a consequence is presented with an element of a fib to avoid confronting the deep meaning that is considered taboo. The concept of taboo is universal, but its object is culture-specific. Basotho ch…

  • The Challenges faced by Teachers and Learners in Implementing Process Writing Approach in a Sesotho Grade 4 Classroom

Open Access•Aaron Mpho Masowa, Madira Thetso•ARTICLE•E-Journal of Humanities Arts and…•2025

Writing is one of the skills that play a crucial role in language teaching and learning because it encourages learners to think creatively. To enhance learners’ writing skills, the National Curriculum Statement recommends the implementation of the Process Writing Approach (PWA). Although the approach is highly recommended, the implementation remains a challenge in schools. This paper was guided by Constructivism Theory, and its main aim is to exp…

  • The exploration of syntactic links

    Open Access•Madira Thetso•ARTICLE•South African Journal of African…•2024

The article explores the violation of grammatical agreement in Sesotho. Grammatical agreement is a significant characteristic in sentence construction. There should be covariance relations between the noun phrase (NP) subject and the device that links it with the verb phrase. However, I have observed that language users violate this agreement relation in their daily conversation. Using the Minimalist Program, sentences collected from native speak…

  • Sesotho control verbs with the reflexive prefix

    Madira Thetso•ARTICLE•Southern African Linguistics and…•2023

This article examines the Sesotho control structures to account for their dual behaviours resulting from the attachment of the reflexive prefix. The reflexive is a morpheme that is annexed to a verb to show that the subject acts upon itself. It is observed that some control verbs yield acceptable syntactic constructions when the reflexive attaches, while others yield unacceptable results. Using the minimalist programme (merge and adjunction) the …

  • Understanding character naming in Khaketla’s Mosali a Nkhola

Open Access•Sol Chaphole, Madira Thetso•ARTICLE•South African Journal of African…•2023

This article aims to understand Khaketla’s intent in naming the characters in Mosali a Nkhola. As one of its key features, a novel has characters whose main purpose is to carry readers through the journey the author proposes for them. Characters, like people in real life, bear names that not only help identify them, but also play a vital role in the development of the theme in a literary text. The author makes assumptions about certain things and…
