Triple dividend impacts: A preliminary mixed methods study of postgraduate work-based learning and research in Australia
Standard approaches to higher education impact generally include intrinsic measures related to learning, teaching, assessment, evaluation and other endemic process concerns, and extrinsic measures related to post-undergraduate salaries, employability, and career development. However, guided by a transdisciplinary pedagogy, work-based learning (WBL) includes higher education degrees that contrast traditional siloed, discipline-specific approaches …
A quasi-experimental mixed methods study of self-esteem and sense of self in Peruvian primary school students who meditate
Stress, Coping, and Transcendental Meditation: A Proto-Theoretical Model and Pilot Study of Indigenous Peruvian Students in Home Isolation During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Mental Health and Meditation in a Post-Pandemic Perú: A Normative Study of Upper Primary School Children
In a post-pandemic Perú, problems associated with the mental health of children have been highlighted and effective methods of intervention have been discussed. This study sought to examine: 1) current levels of depression, anxiety, and stress in Perúvian school children; 2) how these levels compare to other children in Latin America and elsewhere; 3) whether these levels are different when covaried for school, age, gender, and grade level; and 4…
Wellbeing and Indigenous Aymara Orphans in Perú: An Empirical Study at Hogar de Niñas Virgen de Fatima de Chejoña, Puno
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a wide spectrum of well-documented adverse mental health outcomes for children and adults, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), self-harm, suicide, and other detrimental impacts to the well-being of young people. These impacts have extended to Perú where 216,000 people in a population of 33 million died from the disease, despite that country being the first to fully lockdown i…
Consciousness-based education in Bali: A second- and third-person embedded multiple-case study of Negeri Bali Mandara
Consciousness-based education has been described as both an innovative method for developing the consciousness, and thereby the creativity, learning ability and behaviour, of students, and a pedagogical approach designed to reverse negative trends in schools. For either purpose, it has in the last 20 years been implemented in hundreds of schools in 49 countries, for which a considerable body of literature documents its impact on the mental and ph…
Political Competition and State Capacity: Evidence from a Land Allocation Program in Mexico
We develop a model of the politics of state capacity building undertaken by incumbent parties that have a comparative advantage in clientelism rather than in public goods provision. The model predicts that, when challenged by opponents, clientelistic incumbents have the incentive to prevent investments in state capacity. We provide empirical support for the model’s implications by studying policy decisions by the Institutional Revolutionary Party…
The Weak State Trap
Development outcomes come in ‘clusters’ that seem difficult to exit. Typically juxtapositioned are states that are both weak in the sense of lacking fiscal resources, but also patrimonial or clientelistic in the way in which they operate. We document the individual behaviour underlying such a cluster using original data from Colombia. We show that tax evasion, as a measure of state weakness, and vote buying, as a measure of clientelism, are highl…
Health and school performance during home isolation at Institución Educativa Privada Prescott in Puno, Perú
Approximately 2000 indigenous students at Institución Educativa Privada Prescott in Puno, located in the Andes high on the Altiplano of Lake Titicaca, have been instructed in Transcendental Meditation. In this study, we examine the impact of home isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic on physical, cognitive, and emotional health, and school performance for a group of 54 meditating students, and contrast these results to a comparison group of 53 m…
Disciplinarity and Work: Work-Based Learning as an Emergent Transdisciplinary Mode of Study
Work-based learning (WBL) is a pedagogy focused on learning through work, and has been described as an emergent “transdisciplinary” mode of study. Professional Studies is a name given to practice-based research degrees which operationalize WBL. Thus, Professional Studies can be considered transdisciplinary. But what does transdisciplinarity mean in practice and how does it relate to academic disciplines when applied in a WBL context? This paper e…
Aymara Childrens’ Practice of Transcendental Meditation in Perú: A Learning History Model of Parent and Teacher Perceptions
Practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique in schools and universities throughout the world has been well researched over a 50-year period suggesting it is a useful tool for student development and learning. However, introduction of the practice into school systems throughout Latin America is a relatively recent phenomenon and no research has been published on the likely or actual outcomes from this initiative. Moreover, research conduct…
The Real Winner's Curse
Traditional theories of democracy suggest that political representation of excluded groups can reduce their incentives to engage in conflict and lead to lower violence. However, this argument ignores the response of established elites when (1) their interests are threatened by the policy stance of new political actors and (2) elites have a comparative advantage in the exercise of violence. Using a regression discontinuity approach, we show that t…
Conflict, Educational Attainment, and Structural Transformation: La Violencia in Colombia
We examine the long-term impact of violence on educational attainment, with evidence from Colombia’s La Violencia, a period of intense political violence in the mid-twentieth century. We find that individuals exposed to violence during and especially before their schooling years experience a significant and economically meaningful decrease in years of schooling. Exploring consequences beyond human capital accumulation, we show that exposed cohort…
The personal, social and environmental sustainability of Jainism in light of Maharishi Vedic Science
The Need for Enemies
We develop a model where some politicians have an edge in undertaking a task and this gives them electoral advantage, creating an incentive to underperform in the task. We test the empirical implications in the context of fighting against insurgents, using Colombian data. The main prediction is that large defeats for the insurgents reduce the probability that these politicians fight them, especially in electorally salient places. We find that aft…
The political economy of rural property rights and the persistence of the dual economy
Impuestos, crecimiento económico y bienestar en Colombia (1970-1999)
Estimating the macroeconomic implications of tax policy can be extremely cumbersome, especially in developing countries, which exhibit complex and frequently reformed tax systems. Nonetheless, the theoretical importance of taxation is well recognized: by distorting economic decisions, tax policy can affect the allocation of resources, and thereby welfare and growth. In this paper, we follow the method outlined in Mendoza, Razin and Sadka (1994) i…
