  • A comparative study of past and projected future dynamics of drought hazards across the districts of the Northern Cape Province, South Africa: Analysis of CRU TS4 data and Cordex-Africa RCM simulation…

Open Access•Stephen Balaka Opiyo, Lisa Pienaar et al.•ARTICLE•South African Geographical Journal•2026

Drought is among the most pressing natural disasters of the 21st century. The need for insights to support local decision-making in planning and mitigation is critical. The Northern Cape Province of South Africa is highly drought-prone, yet its historical and projected drought patterns are not well understood. Therefore, this study assessed past (1962–2022), near-future (2023–2050), and far-future (2051–2100) drought dynamics across its five dist…

  • Modeling the impacts of land use and land cover changes on streamflow and sediment yield with the SWAT Model in Migori River Watershed, Lake Victoria Basin Region, Kenya

    Stephen Balaka Opiyo•ARTICLE•African Geographical Review•2025

The Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was used to simulate the impacts of LULC changes on streamflow and sediment yields of Migori River watershed. The Nash – Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE), co-efficient of determination (R2), and percent bias (PBIAS) of the monthly streamflow and sediment outflow simulation for the calibration and validation showed good model performance. From 1980 to 2020, the results show a decrease of 40.63% in shrublan…

  • Characterizing rural households’ livelihood vulnerability to climate change and extremes in Migori River Watershed, Kenya

Stephen Balaka Opiyo, Sammy Letema et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2024

Sub-Saharan Africa, of which Kenya is part, is considered the most vulnerable region to climate change impacts due to its dependence on rain-fed agriculture and natural resources. Since the rural livelihood systems in Kenya are expected to bear some of the worst effects of climate change, it is imperative to assess rural households’ vulnerability to climate change impacts to facilitate the development of adaptation strategies. Therefore, this pap…
