The Resilience of Employment in Wales: Through Recession and into Recovery
Sensier M. and Artis M. The resilience of employment in Wales: through recession and into recovery, Regional Studies. The dimensions of resilience of the Welsh employment cycle are assessed. The Welsh economy has undergone reorientation and renewal since the deep crisis of the 1980s and it was more resistant than the UK for the 1990s’ crisis and has recovered its pre-recession peak for the most recent crisis. To visualize the regional spread of t…
Issues in Money Demand: The Case of Europe
This article establishes a co‐integration analysis for the euro area (sample period: 1983–2000), identifying three co‐integrating vectors: one which can be labelled money demand (in which real M3 money balances are related to output, with unit elasticity, and the long rate of interest); another pertaining to the spread between the short and long rate of interest; and a third which is an output (IS) relationship in which output is related to the r…
Currency Choices in an Interdependent World: Lessons from Countries In and Out of the Euro
Interdependence, that is, outcomes depending on what is done by more than one actor, is a fact of life for central banks, reflecting domestic and international pressures, both political and economic. National economies have become increasingly internationalized through trade in goods and services and in currencies too. In consequence, the economies of large as well as small countries are now shaped by actions abroad as well as by decisions at hom…
Currency Interdependence: What Economics has to say
Examining the economic costs and benefits of currency union has value in itself and, insofar as policymakers take non-economic costs into account, doing so helps identify costs they are prepared to accept in order to achieve political objectives. Questions of policy competence have become more complex, however, since Mundell's seminal article of 1961. Krugman provides a simple framework for relating trade integration to currency area membership. …
Close‐to‐Balance or in Surplus: A Policy‐Maker's Guide to the Implementation of the Stability and Growth Pact
Under the Stability and Growth Pact, countries are committed to achieve medium‐term budget positions of ‘close‐to‐balance or in surplus’. The rationale for this commitment is that such budgetary positions would allow for the full working of the built‐in stabilizers without triggering the sanctions procedures of the Pact. This article sets out to show how quantifications of the medium‐term (structural) requirement can accommodate the desired aim a…
