Representations of Plague and Violence in Late Medieval Hispano-Jewish Communities
In the aftermath of the Black Death there were concerns with memorializing the event. These were part of a somber mood that affected numerous phenomena in different fields. Indeed, the bubonic plague seems to have left traces in such areas as religion, visual arts, literary compositions, commemorations, and attitudes toward death. The historical study of such representations, therefore, cannot be limited to any one field but necessitates an inter…
Centenary Paper: Mishnaic Translations in Late Medieval Spain: On Some Known and Unknown Manuscripts
Amongst the various translations from Hebrew into Spanish produced in medieval Spain, those of Mishnaic tractates are inspiring scholarly interest in recent decades. The present article is concerned with some aspects of these texts. Particularly interesting are the questions of attitudes to them; their cultural/ intellectual significance and function; what they tell us about languages in the late medieval Iberian Peninsula. Finally, the article p…
Chivalry and the Jews in Late Medieval Spain
A long standing tradition posits an opposition between the Jews and the ideals and reality of medieval chivalry (i.e., before 1492). The article argues against such generalizations. It begins by noting the research on chivalric imaginaire amongst Jews in Franco-German areas. In the case of Hispanic Jews, oral literature, particularly ballads, includes points of contact with Libros de caballería. Even (neo-) Aramaic mystical texts from thirteenth-…
The Rabbi and the Mancebo: Arévalo and the Location of Affinities in the Fifteenth Century
The background to this paper is the difference between occasionally atemporal and multinational approaches and local, historical approaches to religious ideas and encounters. The chosen example is that of two authors from one town (Arévalo) and one historical moment (fifteenth-century Castile). The article attempts firstly to identify stylistic, rhetorical, and literary elements in the historiographic traditions about the reputation of the town. …
The Judeo–Christian Polemic and the Intelligence of Emotions
This essay examines the place of emotions and emotional discourse—love, friendship, human kindness, etc.—in selected polemical and literary texts from late medieval Iberia. It suggests that a view of the non-polemical or extra-polemical elements of the texts—especially expressions of emotion, exclamations, interjections, and other examples of passion—provide a novel approach to such material apart from traditional studies of polemical content. A …
Mourning, Melancholy and Hexis: Towards a Context for Fritz Yshaq Baer
An examination, annotation and translation of the hitherto unpublished correspondence with Baer in the Baron papers lead to a re-contextualization. Intensified after his demise in 1980, a large stream of publications attempted to contextualize the work of the historian of the Jews of Christian Spain, Fritz Yshaq Baer, against the background of broadly known events of the twentieth century, identifying him with a “School” of Jewish history. Here t…
Archival Poetics: Questions of Evidence in Reconstructions of Judeo-Spanish Culture
Because of the late date of most surviving (oral and textual) examples of vernacular literature in Judeo-Spanish communities, any evidence indicating the earlier presence of such literature assumes a particular significance. Archival records, some of which are analysed in this article, can provide such evidence, leading us to challenge received ideas about early and late Judeo-Spanish culture, and to question traditionally used categories such as…

Coplas de Yocef from the Genizah
The article attempts to contribute to the study of the fortuna of one of the most notable compositions in the vernacular of the Jews in Christian Spain. It does this in three ways : 1. by reconstructing a specific cultural background of interest in the Joseph story ; 2. by reopening the discussion of the provenance of Gonzalez Llubera's MSC ; 3. by describing CUL Taylor Schechter Genizah fragments of a hitherto unknown aljamiado print of the work
