Transcendence in literature and film
The aim of the article is to compare the ways in which transcendence is portrayed in literature and cinema, using the example of László Krasznahorkai’s novel Sátántangó and its film adaptation directed by Béla Tarr. The introduction outlines the current state of research on this topic, followed by a detailed comparative analysis of the different levels at which transcendence manifests in the novel and the film. These levels include: (1) the impli…
Konstelacja Mulvey
Bergsonowska koncepcja pamięci a filmowe przedstawienia pamięci protetycznej
Henri Bergson w pracy Materia i pamięć (1896) odróżnił dwa rodzaje pamięci: mózgową i czystą.
Defining documentary
The aim of this paper is to define documentary film. After a brief review of existing definitions, the author proposes his own. The methods of working on the set and the textual features of the films are considered as distinguishing documentary filmmaking from other film genres. Issues such as the filmmakers’ interference with the filmed reality, the criteria for distinguishing between fictional and non-fictional elements, the admissibility of sp…
W poszukiwaniu siebie.
Ujęcie to wydaje się wręcz idealnie ilustrować Lacanowską koncepcję fazy lustra, wedle której wraz z momentem rozpoznania siebie w lustrze dziecko nabiera poczucia własnej odrębności,…
On the Margin of ”Satantango”. Some Remarks on Slow Cinema
Athough Satantango by Bela Tarr is usually regarded as a perfect representative of slow cinema and certainly deserves this reputation, it is worth remembering that it shares some features with other currents of modern cinema. Its networkish structure and unreliable narration place it close to puzzle films; its close affinity with the Krasznahorkai novel, on which it is based, makes it a form of impure – that is – hybrid cinema; due to an accumula…
The Category of System in David Bordwell’s Concept of Film Aesthetics
The aim of this paper is to analyse the role played by the category of system in the early books of David Bordwell. They have exerted an enormous influence on the understanding of film aesthetics, but little space has been devoted to their methodological background, including the category of system. In Film Art: An Introduction (1979), all elements of film form have a systemic character, which is visible in the chapter titles, such as “Form as Sy…
Przyjemność na granicy dyskomfortu
Artykuł jest recenzją książki Barbary Szczekały pt. Mind-game films. Gry z narracją i widzem (2019). Książka kładzie nacisk na komplikacje i zawiłości narracyjne filmów gier umysłowych. Zadaniem odbiorcy byłoby te zawiłości zrozumieć, z rozsypanych puzzli ułożyć spójny obrazek, zagadki i tajemnice wyjaśnić.
