  • Counselor Educators' Perspectives on Helpful Learning for Clinical Mental Health Counseling Students

    Thirty-two counselor educators completed Q sorts measuring beliefs about helpful learning for clinical mental health counseling students. Four viewpoints developed: Preparing Scientists of Counseling, Preparing Agents of Change, Preparing Lifelong Learner-Practitioners, Preparing Artists of Counseling. Implications for teaching and curricula within counselor education programs and future research directions are discussed

  • The Impact of Teaching Preparation Practices on Self-Efficacy Toward Teaching

    Coursework in teaching, fieldwork, and supervised teaching experiences were examined as predictors of counselor education doctoral students' (N = 149) self-efficacy toward teaching. Results revealed that all 3 variables related significantly to self-efficacy toward teaching. Results suggested that students' satisfaction with supervision of teaching was particularly important in strengthening self-efficacy

    In this descriptive phenomenological study, we investigated 10 counselor education doctoral students' experiences with supervision of their teaching. Three supervision of teaching (SupT) structural themes were identified: delivery, dynamics, and distinctions. Implications for implementing SupT on the basis of these structures are discussed, along with the limitations of this study and suggestions for future research. A working definition of SupT …

  • A Phenomenological Investigation of Creative Teaching in Counselor Education

    The authors conducted a phenomenological investigation of creative teaching with 10 counselor educators. The resulting 4 themes suggest creative teaching (a) is shaped by past experiences, (b) promotes student engagement, (c) is not formulary, and (d) requires risk taking. Implications for creative teaching strategies and training are provided. Limitations and implications for future research on creative pedagogy are discussed

  • Professional Functioning: Exploring Developmental Narratives of Counselor Trainees
