  • How Have Alcohol Producers Changed the Alcohol Content of Their Products? A Descriptive Analysis of Reformulation in the Off‐Trade Alcohol Market in G reat B ritain, 2018–2025

Open Access•Charlie Angus, Luke B Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2026

  • What Are the Characteristics of Households That Purchase Alcohol‐Free and Low‐Alcohol Drinks in Great Britain in 2018 and 2021

Open Access•Zoe L Clarke, Robert Pryce et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2026

  • Reducing the exceptional affordability of hand-rolling tobacco using tax escalators

Open Access•R Chen, Ryan Kai Le Chen et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2026

Sustained duty increases on the least expensive tobacco products could deliver substantial public health gains and reduce health inequalities. Such measures should coincide with strong enforcement against illicit tobacco and comprehensive smoking cessation support

  • Quantile regression of tobacco tax pass-through in the UK 2017–2021

    Open Access•Luke Wilson, Luke B Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2025

Our evidence shows heterogeneous levels of tax pass-through by price, region and level of deprivation. The findings emphasise the importance of understanding the pricing strategies of the tobacco industry (TI) and how these vary across the UK to develop robust approaches to mitigate the pricing strategies of the TI

  • Purchase price of tobacco in small retailers in Great Britain

Open Access•Helena Tunstall, Luke Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2025

Differences in average price paid for tobacco between more and less deprived neighbourhoods reflect variations in numbers of purchases across price segments. Combined (FMC and RYO) tobacco prices per stick have fallen, reflecting increasing RYO sales. Innovative approaches are required to respond to the tobacco industry's price differentiation by both price segment and product type and the growing importance of lower price RYO products

  • Model-based appraisal of the potential effects of minimum pricing for tobacco in Scotland

Open Access•Duncan Gillespie, Damon Morris et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2025

A minimum price implemented alongside tobacco duty rises could reduce smoking rates and improve public health, especially for those living in deprived areas where smoking rates and related harms are highest

  • Temporary and sustained changes in alcoholic and alcohol-free or low-alcohol drinks sales during January? A time series analysis of seasonal patterning in Great Britain

Open Access•Aisha Moolla, John Holmes et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2025

There are short-term decreases in standard alcoholic drink sales and increases in no/lo drink sales in January but there appeared to be no substantial sustained changes

  • Estimation of integrated price elasticities for alcohol and tobacco in the United Kingdom using the living costs and food survey 2006–2017

Open Access•Robert Pryce, Luke B Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Drug and Alcohol Review•2024

  • How did the ‘whistle-to-whistle’ ban affect gambling advertising on TV? A live football matching study

Open Access•Ellen McGrane, Robert Pryce et al.•ARTICLE•Addiction Research & Theory•2024

A voluntary partial gambling advertising ban in the UK was associated with reductions in television advertising during live football games during the restricted period. There is evidence of increased advertising in the unrestricted period due to the partial nature of the ban. Future research is needed to explore the impact of the ban on other types of advertising, and across other channels

  • Geographical differences in the financial impacts of different forms of tobacco licence fees on small retailers in Scotland

Open Access•Roberto Valiente, Helena Tunstall et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2024

The introduction of tobacco licence fees offers a potential opportunity for reducing the availability of tobacco retailers. The likely impact of a tobacco licence fee is sensitive to the type of licence scheme implemented, the level at which fees are set and the retailers' location in relation to neighbourhood deprivation and rurality

  • Trends in alcohol expenditure among risky drinkers

Open Access•Sarah E Jackson, Melissa Oldham et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2024

In England, the average amount adult risky drinkers reported spending on alcohol each week has fluctuated since 2014, with a notable decrease around the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and a subsequent rise since restrictions were lifted and since the cost-of-living crisis has led to high rates of inflation. Except for current smokers, this pattern appears to have been driven predominantly by changes in the price paid per unit rather than …

  • Does cutting down on your food consumption lead to a net improvement in nutritional intake? A panel data approach using data from the UK Biobank

Open Access•Luke Wilson, Luke B Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

We find that sugar confectionery and crisps and savoury snacks are less likely to result in substitution than chocolate confectionery. This would suggest that food policies aiming to reduce the consumption of these food groups are more likely to result in overall lower consumption of unhealthy foods

  • Mapping alcohol and tobacco tax policy interventions to inform health and economic impact analyses

Open Access•Jenny Hatchard, Penny Buykx et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2023

Impact analyses should consider the combined effects of alcohol and tobacco tax policies on health and economic inequalities, and how the effects of changes to the tax on each commodity might trade-off

  • Quantile regression of tobacco tax pass-through in the UK 2013–2019. How have manufacturers passed through tax changes for different tobacco products

    Open Access•Luke Wilson, Luke B Wilson et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2020

Following the repeated introduction of increases in specific tobacco tax as well as standardised packaging, we show that the tobacco industry applies techniques to keep the cheapest tobacco cheaper relative to the more expensive products when passing on tax increases to smokers
