  • A large-scale view on ‘small-scale societies’

Open Access•Andreas Maier, Isabell Schmidt et al.•CHAPTER•Scale Matters•2022

  • State of the Art in Paleoenvironment Mapping for Modeling Applications in Archeology—Summary, Conclusions, and Future Directions from the PaleoMaps Workshop

Open Access•Christian Willmes, Kamil Niedziółka et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary•2020

In this report, we present the contributions, outcomes, ideas, discussions and conclusions obtained at the PaleoMaps Workshop 2019, that took place at the Institute of Geography of the University of Cologne on 23 and 24 September 2019. The twofold aim of the workshop was: (1) to provide an overview of approaches and methods that are presently used to incorporate paleoenvironmental information in human–environment interaction modeling applications…

  • Human existence potential in Europe during the Last Glacial Maximum

    Open Access•Konstantin Klein, Christian Wegener et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 12

  • Demographic estimates of hunter–gatherers during the Last Glacial Maximum in Europe against the background of palaeoenvironmental data

Open Access•Andreas Maier, Frank Lehmkuhl et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

  • New investigations at the Middle Stone Age site of Pockenbank Rockshelter, Namibia

Open Access•Isabell Schmidt, Götz Ossendorf et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2016•References: 3

In southern Africa, Middle Stone Age sites with long sequences have been the focus of intense international and interdisciplinary research over the past decade (cf. Wadley 2015). Two techno-complexes of the Middle Stone Age-the Still Bay and Howiesons Poort-have been associated with many technological and behavioural innovations of Homo sapiens. The classic model argues that these two techno-complexes are temporally separated 'horizons' with homo…

  • Beyond Solutrean Point Types: Technological Organization and Behavioral Implications

    Isabell Schmidt•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 19

This paper presents results from a study of Solutrean points from Upper Solutrean assemblages on the Iberian Peninsula. This supraregional, comparative approach—using a standardized and consistent set of attributes and analytical methods—focuses on the technological organization and strategies involved in the design, production, and use of these tools to shed light on possible reasons for synchronic variability beyond that of the final tool types…

  • New evidence for the Mousterian and Gravettian at Rio Secco Cave, Italy

    M Peresani, Matteo Romandini et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 29•References: 8

The dearth of evidence for late Neanderthals in Europe reduces our ability to understand the demise of their species and the impact of the biological and cultural changes that resulted from the spread of anatomically modern humans. In this light, a recently investigated cave in the northern Adriatic region at the border between the Italian Alps and the Great Adriatic Plain provides useful data about the last Neanderthals between 46·0 and 42·1 ky …

  • Rapid climate change and variability of settlement patterns in Iberia during the Late Pleistocene

    Open Access•Isabell Schmidt, Marcel Bradtmöller et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2012•Cited by: 74•References: 38

  • A Middle Stone Age Assemblage with Discoid Lithic Technology from Etemba 14, Erongo Mountains, Northern Namibia

    Isabell Schmidt•ARTICLE•Journal of African Archaeology•2011•Cited by: 5

Etemba 14 was excavated in two seasons (1968 and 1984) and yielded a stratigraphic sequence with Later Stone Age (LSA) and Middle Stone Age (MSA) material. Stone Age (LSA) and Middle Stone Age (MSA) material. Human remains discovered among material of the first excavation had been assigned to the MSA complex. The diachronic analysis of material from the second excavation showed that 1) the transition correlates with the sedimentological change fr…

  • The “Malta Realism: On Interpreting Siberian Anthropomorphic Figurines From the Upper Paleolithic

    Open Access•Isabell Schmidt, I V Schmidt•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2010•References: 3

This article revisits the meaning of Upper Paleolithic figurines from Malta. Anthropomorphic figurines show childlike proportions and lack mouths. Archaeological and ethnographic data suggest that the figurines in question represent children, and that the figurines of wingless birds relate to infants or rather, to their “souls

  • Siberian Paleolithic Ornithomorphous Figurines: A Forgotten Hypothesis and Its Prospects
