Constructing Hydraulic Infrastructure in the ʿAbbāsid and Ṭūlūnid Capitals: Water Conduits in Baghdad, Samarra and Cairo between the Eighth and Ninth Centuries
Large cities have always required access to water – a requirement that has been met in different ways over time and place. During the early Islamic period, a variety of sources of evidence survive attesting to the construction of substantial pieces of infrastructure that carried water into cities. These were often expensive undertakings requiring significant investment of financial and labour resources, while their intended use often seems to hav…
Transitions: A Historian's Memoir
As a rule, reading intellectual autobiographies can be a tepid experience. When not downright vindictive or self-promoting, the author often seems to hover effortlessly, like a hang glider, over the field, far above the sweat, the chill sense of ignorance, and the crashing through the undergrowth that accompanies the search for truth about the past. Such essays assume that thought begins only with the first graduate paper and continues, triumphan…
A major city of the Kazakh Steppe? Investigating Semiyarka’s Bronze Age legacy
Occupied from around 1600 BC and linked to the Cherkaskul and Alekseevka-Sargary cultures, Semiyarka is a newly identified 140ha Late Bronze Age settlement in north-eastern Kazakhstan. The site represents a unique settlement with planned architecture—including a central monumental structure—low-density pottery scatter and evidence for organised tin-bronze production
The landscape of the Zanj Rebellion? Dating the remains of a large-scale agricultural system in southern Iraq
A system of abandoned ridge/earthwork features covers a large swathe of the Shaṭṭ al-cArab floodplain in southern Iraq, standing as testament to a period of agricultural expansion in the past. Until now, the chronology of these features has been surmised from limited textual evidence that relates their construction to slave labour during the early Islamic period associated with the 'Zanj rebellion'. This article presents the first absolute dates …

Portrait: Peter Brown
I spent the first years of my life in Sudan where my father worked for the Sudan railways. I was proud to have a Daddy whose railway network stretched, over hundreds of miles, from the borders of Egypt to the savannahs and the great green swamps of the southern Nile. One of my first childhood memories is from 1937 when, at the ripe age of two, I respectfully fed my Mickey Mouse handkerchief to the resident hippopotamus in the Khartoum zoo
Supplying a medieval metropolis: Water management and agriculture in the hinterland of early Islamic Basra
Following its foundation in the 630s CE, medieval Basra rapidly expanded to became one of the most populous cities of southern Iraq and the wider Gulf region. At its foundation, the city’s surrounding environment appears to have been poorly suited to sustaining a large urban population. This paper examines the different ways in which the early Islamic population of Basra transformed the immediate environs of the city to improve the urban water su…
Longquan celadon: A quantitative archaeological analysis of a pan-Indian Ocean industry of the 12 th to 15 th centuries
This paper examines the Longquan celadon industry, located in Zhejiang province in China, which flourished mainly between the Southern Song and early Ming dynasties (12th to 15th century). The products of this industry are found on archaeological sites from across China and the Indian Ocean. This paper attempts a quantified analysis of the development of the industry based on archaeological data, focussing on four aspects: production, domestic co…

Language policy in the Francophone world and the Forum mondial de la langue française
The situation of the French language has been a matter of discussion and concern for some time across the Francophone world. Signs of this can be seen in France with the loi Toubon and the loi Fioraso, and in Quebec where the Marois government proposed modifications to the Charte de la langue française. The Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, for its part, has moved in recent years towards formulating a new language policy. This led t…
Validating a measure of self-efficacy for life tasks in male OEF/OIF veterans
This paper describes the development and preliminary validation of a scale to assess perceived self-efficacy to complete culturally and age-appropriate life tasks (SelfEfficacy for Life Tasks, or SELT) among male veterans of Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom; OEF) and Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom; OIF). The SELT scale was developed for this population in a multistage process that included: 1) semistructured interviews inquiring about expec…

The Spatial Targeting of Urban Policy Initiatives: A Geodemographic Assessment Tool
Government frequently adopts an area-based approach to the targeting of urban policy initiatives as an indirect way of reaching the individuals that the initiatives are intended to help. The paper develops a method for assessing the success of this spatial targeting. It uses a geodemographic classification system to produce a generalised socioeconomic profile for a particular initiative. This profile can be used to examine the targeting of the in…

The Brain of LB1, Homo floresiensis
The brain of Homo floresiensis was assessed by comparing a virtual endocast from the type specimen (LB1) with endocasts from great apes, Homo erectus, Homo sapiens , a human pygmy, a human microcephalic, specimen number Sts 5 ( Australopithecus africanus ), and specimen number WT 17000 ( Paranthropus aethiopicus ). Morphometric, allometric, and shape data indicate that LB1 is not a microcephalic or pygmy. LB1's brain/body size ratio scales like t…
Remembering the Poor and the Aesthetic of Society
The notion of the "good" society varied greatly from century to century and from place to place; the care of the poor varied accordingly. Those who showed the most concern about helping the poor—religious leaders, scholars, and ascetics—tended to be the ones who depended most on the favor and patronage of the powerful and wealthy. To urge that the powerful and wealthy always "remember the poor" was a way to ensure that they themselves would not b…
Post-Pleistocene diachronic change in East Asian facial skeletons: The Size, Shape and Volume of the Orbits
Globally there was a reduction in the size and robusticity of the human orofacial skeleton and dentition after the Pleistocene. There was also diachronic change in brain size and skeletal mass in general. Anthropologists have developed numerous models in explanation of the evolutionary process, with the majority linked to the cultural developments of the Neolithic. These cultural models are challenged by the skeletal evidence from societies with …
