Cholera in Kenya
Cholera remains a major public health challenge in Kenya, driven by environmental pollution, poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, weak monitoring systems, and climate effects. While there have been improvements in studying the disease, testing, monitoring, and environmental checks, the spread continues, especially in informal settlements, rural areas, and refugee camps. This review looked at 106 peer-reviewed studies published b…
Travel- and Community-Based Transmission of Multidrug-Resistant Shigella sonnei Lineage among International Orthodox Jewish Communities
Shigellae are sensitive indicator species for studying trends in the international transmission of antimicrobial-resistant Enterobacteriaceae. Orthodox Jewish communities (OJCs) are a known risk group for shigellosis; Shigella sonnei is cyclically epidemic in OJCs in Israel, and sporadic outbreaks occur in OJCs elsewhere. We generated whole-genome sequences for 437 isolates of S. sonnei from OJCs and non-OJCs collected over 22 years in Europe (th…
Coalition formation to address structural determinants of methamphetamine use in Thailand
Despite two recent government-sponsored 'wars on drugs', methamphetamine use continues to be a pervasive problem in Thailand. Out of concern for reported human rights abuses, there has been a call from the international community to take a different approach from the government's 'zero tolerance'. This paper describes the adaptation of the Connect to Protect® coalition formation process from urban U.S. cities to three districts in northern Thaila…
Social Competence in Infants and Toddlers with Special Health Care Needs
Little research has empirically addressed the relationships among parental knowledge of child development, parental attunement, parental expectations, and child independence in predicting the social competence of infants and toddlers with special health care needs. We used baseline data from the Strengthening Families Project, a prevention intervention study that tested Bavolek's Nurturing Program for Parents and Their Children with Health Challe…
Mentees' Perceptions of Their Interpersonal Relationships
Outcome studies of mentoring programs have demonstrated that they hold considerable promise in promoting competence across multiple developmental domains. A theoretical model of mentoring identified modification of youths' perceptions of their interpersonal relationships as a contributor to positive outcomes. To date, however, there has not been a direct examination of the role of the mentor-youth bond in this process. The present study examines …

Sex Differences in the Multidimensional Self-Concepts of African American Adolescents
The present study investigates whether the gender identities of African American adolescents mediate sex differences found in their multidimensional self-concepts. The sample included 174 African American adolescents who completed the 21-item Children's Personal Attributes Questionnaire and the Self-Perception Profile for Adolescents. Results indicated that two dimensions of gender identity, Independence and Leadership, mediated the relationship …
Analysis of the Children?s Personal Attributes Questionnaire (Short Form) with a Sample of African American Adolescents
Academic Achievement Among African American Adolescents
A path model examining the direct and indirect effects of demographic, individual, and contextual variables on the academic achievement of 174 African American adolescents was assessed. Results indicated that participant sex indirectly impacted participants' sense of self-worth through their perceptions of themselves as possessing leadership or independence qualities. Whether adolescents felt good about themselves (global self-worth) was a direct…
The Recruitment Process
This article explored recruitment patterns, as well as factors that predicted these patterns, in a relationship-based substance abuse prevention intervention study, targeting inner-city African American adolescents living in economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. Of the 257 eligible participants, 38.5% (N = 99) enrolled in the project. It required a total of 559 contacts to enroll these participants, in addition to the 99 home visits that were…
