    급진적인 경건주의자 고트프리드 아놀드(Gottfried Arnold)는 자신의 대작(大作) 『비당파적인 교회사와 이단사』에서 초기 기독교 공동체로부터 1688년 자신이 살던 시대까지의 교회 역사를 철저히 연구하였다. 그 결과, 그는 전체 교회 역사를 ‘타락한 역사’(Verfallsgeschichte)로서의 제도권 교회 역사와 ‘경건한 역사’(Frömmigkeitsgeschichte)로서의 참된 그리스도인의 경건한 삶으로 구분하고 대조시키며 서술하였다. 특히 그는 초대 기독교 공동체 그리스도인들의 신앙과 삶을 부패한 현(現) 제도권 교회를 개혁하기 위한 거울(Spiegel)로 파악하였다. 흥미로운 점은 아놀드가 『비당파적인 교회사와 이단사』에서 전(全) 교회의 역사를 ‘타락한 역사’라고 신랄하게 비판하였는데, 이러한 비판의 근거를 종교개혁자 마르틴 루터의 생애와 사상에 두고 있다는 사실이다. 특히…
