Dr. S. Balachandra Rao – The Guiding Star of Indian Astronomy
The Salutary Simplifications in Astronomical Procedures by Gaṇeśa Daivajña
Gaṇeśa Daivajña is one of the great luminaries of post–Bhāskara period who is responsible for upholding the great tradition of Indian astronomy and Mathematics through his very creative and popular works. Gaṇeśa has simplified the procedures of computations of planetary positions and eclipses by completely dispensing with trigonometric functions, without sacrificing the correctness of the results. These procedures are otherwise laborious by the t…
References to 'Parallel Phenomenon’ in Indian Astronomy and Inscriptions
In the present paper we discuss briefly an interesting astronomical event called "Parallel phenomenon" or "Parallel aspect" in astronomical sciences. Besides explaining this phenomenon, we provide interesting historical Indian references recorded in classical astronomical texts and also in some old inscriptions
The Equation of the Conjunction (Śīghraphala) of the Planets in Classical Indian Astronomy
In classical Indian Astronomy the true positions of the five planets are determined by repeatedly applying two equations, viz the equation of centre ( mandaphala ) and the equation of conjunction ( śīghraphala ). In the present paper we concentrate on the equation of conjunction ( śīghraphala ). Here, conjunction refers to the conjunction of a planet with the Sun, considering the 'anomaly’ of their mean positions. In this process the concepts inv…
Importance of Bhāskara’s Karaṇakutūhala as an Algorithmic Handbook
In the current paper we have presented the procedures according to the Karaṇakutūhala of Bhāskara II (b. CE 1114) for (i) śīgraphala ('equation of conjunction’) of the five planets and their maximum values and critical points; (ii) retrograde motion and the analysis of two stationary points for each planet; and (iii) the angular diameters of the Sun, the Moon and the Earth’s shadow cone which are necessary for the computations of eclipses
Diameters ( Bimbas ) of the Sun, Moon and Earth's Shadow-Cone in Indian Astronomical Texts, With Special Reference to the Makarandasāriṇῑ and the Gaṇakānanda
The diameters of the Sun, Moon and Earth's shadow-cone are important in the computation of lunar and solar eclipses. This paper discusses the procedures for computing the diameters of the Sun, Moon and Earth's shadow-cone according to the Makarandasāriṇῑ and the Gaṇakānanda texts. The results are compared with those of the basic siddhādntic text, the Sūryasiddhānta , and with the popular astronomical handbook, the Grahalāghava of Gaṇeśa Daivajña …
