Contra spem spero? Cicero's Last Political Struggle
The aim of this article is to show how Marcus Tullius Cicero's hope for the restoration of the republic after Caesar's assassination changed in the last years of his life. The author analyses the information contained in Cicero's surviving letters and philosophical writings from that period. Their message is not unambiguous, which means that they can be interpreted in different ways today. Cicero was not a supporter of Caesar's dictatorship, but …
On Manipulating the Auspices Before Electoral Assemblies
The aim of the article is to present possible manipulations of auspices during the decline of the Roman Republic in relation to situations related to electoral assemblies. The starting point is a discussion of concepts related to auspices, with particular emphasis on terms such as servare de caelo and obnuntiatio. The author indicates interpretation difficulties related to the analysis of source texts. Therefore, when we take them into account an…
Invectives and Lampoons Against Caesar
The author once again refers to a 1935 book by a Lublin-based scholar M. Popławski ( Political Opinion Journalism in the Age of Caesar and Augustus ). This time, she deals with invectives and lampoons against Caesar. She discusses the rumour of the Bithynian episode and the figures of various authors of caustic but popular texts on Caesar, among these Calvus, Bibulus or Curio. She also presents the background of the mimographer Laberius’ performa…
The ‘plebs contionalis’ – a perfect popular assembly participant
The writings of Cicero refer in various ways, often critically, to citizens who participated in contiones. Contemporary researchers refer to them as plebs contionalis, coined by Christian Meier. Although this term does not occur in the sources, many historians have concluded that it perfectly describes the citizens who regularly attended popular gatherings. The problem, however, is that the issues raised during the contiones were so varied, and t…
Emiliusz Paulus W Podróży Po Grecji
Following the Battle of Pydna, the victorious general Lucius Aemilius Paullus embarked on a trip of Greece. Accounts of the event may be found in Polybius, Livy and Plutarch. Each of them focused on different aspects of that journey. The most extensive surviving report is provided in Livy’s Ab Urbe Condita (45, 27-28), which is therefore the basic reference for the analysis conducted by the author in this paper. Her particular focus is on the fra…
Władza i urzędnicy w starożytnym Rzymie. Uwagi wstępne
Kilka uwag polemicznych odnośnie do „ostatniej uchwały senatu” (K. Prokop, Modele stanu nadzwyczajnego, Wydawnictwo Temida 2, Białystok 2012)

O adfectatores regni i manipulowaniu historią
On adfectatores regni and on Tampering with History(Summary)The issue of adfectatores regni probably did not come into view before the later Republic. An accusation of aiming at regal power became a tool of political struggle in the dispute between the optimates and the populares. Roman historians who dealt with the early Republican period might have used contemporary or not very distant events as a basis on which to create a history of the past,…
