  • Shared secrecy

    Open Access•Aude Michelet•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Anthropologica…•2022•References: 53

In recent decades, anthropologists have scrutinized psychologists' claim that humans process information about others by imputing mental states. The debate remains open whether cross-cultural variability in how people conceive of minds and inner states reflects differences in their folk theories only, or whether it engenders deep-grained psychological differences. In this article, I look at the very onset of children's apprenticeship in emotional…

  • Playing at etiquette, learning respect in contemporary Middle Gobi (Mongolia)

    Aude Michelet•ARTICLE•AnthropoChildren•2019

    Aude Michelet•ARTICLE•Cahiers d anthropologie sociale•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 2

  • What Makes Children Work? The Participative Trajectory in Domestic and Pastoral Chores of Children in Southern Mongolia

    Open Access•Aude Michelet•ARTICLE•Ethos•2016•Cited by: 7•References: 51

This article presents an ethnographic study of how children in rural southern Mongolia became competent at pastoral and domestic chores in the years 2006 and 2008-2009. Previous research shows that children's spontaneous interest in learning to work in order to be helpful is cross-culturally pervasive. Little attention has, however, been paid to the fluctuating nature of children's motivation. In this article, I argue that like learning, motivati…

  • Why are Mongolian Infants Treated Like 'Kings

    Aude Michelet•ARTICLE•Inner Asia•2015•Cited by: 2•References: 9

As infants and toddlers, Mongolian children grow up as the centre of attention in their home, promptly taken care of and tenderly indulged. In this paper, I seek to explain why young children in the middle Gobi enjoy a privileged status, in contrast with their status as older children. I show how the physical, emotional and moral peculiarities of infants' and toddlers' personhood converge in conferring upon them 'kingly' prerogatives. I then exam…
