Unaccusativity and Grammatical Aspect: A Cross-Modal Lexical Priming Study
Unergative verbs assign the agent theta role to subjects whereas unaccusative verbs occur with theme subjects. Theory suggests that, unlike subjects of unergative verbs, theme subjects of unaccusative verbs are merged in the post-verbal internal argument position and moved to the pre-verbal external argument position. In a cross-modal lexical priming experiment, we tracked (re‐)activation patterns of the subject in sentences with imperfective and…
Sentence Production in Standard Indonesian Agrammatism
Visual priming and parsing preferences: A self-paced reading study of PP-attachment ambiguity in Dutch verb-final structures
The role of semantics and repair processes in article-noun gender disagreement in Italian: An ERP study
In this sentence reading study, we used event-related potentials (ERPs) to investigate the processing mechanism of article-noun gender disagreement in two kinds of nouns in Italian. The first are nouns with syntactic gender (il trenoM ‘train’; la sediaF ‘chair’) for which the processing and repair of gender disagreement entails only one repair option, namely for the article (morphosyntactic repair). The second kind are nouns with semantic gender …
Aspect and tense attrition in Russian-German bilingual speakers
Purpose: The impact of second language (L2) on first language (L1), known as L2 transfer, has been suggested as a fundamental driving force of L1 attrition. The goal of this study was to test the differential attrition of verb aspect and tense in L1 (Russian) under the influence of L2 (German) grammatical properties. We also investigated whether the age of bilingualism onset and the amount of exposure to L1 modulate this L2 transfer effect. Metho…
Minimality effects in agrammatic comprehension: The role of lexical restriction and feature impoverishment
Finite verb inflections for evidential categories and source identification in Turkish agrammatic Broca's aphasia
Time reference in Spanish and Catalan non-fluent aphasia
The Electrophysiological Manifestation of Dutch Verb Second Violations
We investigated the processing of violations of the verb position in Dutch, in a group of healthy subjects, by measuring event-related potentials (ERPs) through electroencephalography (EEG). In Dutch, the base position of the verb is clause final, but in matrix clauses, the finite verb is in second position, a construction known as Verb Second. In embedded clauses, the finite verb remains in its clause-final base position. The results show that u…
Auditory Sentence Processing an Introduction
Mensch: A German word which, in Yiddish, means "a good person".A mensch is a particularly good person with the qualities one would hope for in a dear friend or trusted colleague; a gentleman. In 2000, Dave Swinney and Roelien Bastiaanse started a joint project on online sentence processing in Dutch and English. This project, entitled "The role of the verb in online auditory sentence processing in Dutch" was financed by the Dutch Science Foundation …
The Time Course of Verb Processing in Dutch Sentences
The verb has traditionally been characterized as the central element in a sentence. Nevertheless, the exact role of the verb during the actual ongoing comprehension of a sentence as it unfolds in time remains largely unknown. This paper reports the results of two Cross-Modal Lexical Priming (CMLP) experiments detailing the pattern of verb priming during on-line processing of Dutch sentences. Results are contrasted with data from a third CMLP expe…
Sonority substitutions in language disorders
this paper we consider a widely attested process: sonority substitutions whereby sounds of a certain sonority class change into sounds of another sonority class
