World-Concepts in Kant’s Anthropology
Kant often uses the term ‘world’ in compound nouns such as Weltkenntnis , Weltklugheit , Weltbürger , and Weltbegriff der Philosophie , among others. These concepts present a challenge to translators, and scholars tend to interpret them in isolation, ignoring their connections. Focusing on Kant’s novel project of a pragmatic anthropology, our case study reveals the distinct roles of the concepts of Weltkenntnis , Weltklugheit , Weltmann , and Wel…
Anthropological Foundations of Kant’s and Sen’s Models of Social Rationality
Kant’s Anthropology in the Debates on Anthropological Deficits of Contemporary Sociology
Most scholars explicitly trying to overcome anthropological deficits in sociological methodology in general, rather than seeking to establish an anthropological sub-discipline of sociology, represent one of two standpoints: the ontological or the epistemological approach. Unfortunately, Kant’s anthropology has up to now mostly played a marginal role in this context. I show that Kant’s anthropological ideas can significantly contribute to the epis…
The Role of Exceptionalism in the Evolution of Bioethical Regulation
The paper aims to present a critical analysis of the phenomenon and notion of exceptionalism in bioethics. The authors demonstrate that exceptionalism pertains to phenomena that are not (yet) entirely familiar to us and could potentially bear risks regarding their regulation. After an overview of the state of the art, we briefly describe the origins and evolution of the concept, compared to exception and exclusion. In the second step, they look a…
Russian pseudo-conservatism in an international context
This paper presents a short analysis of the so-called ‘conservative turn’ in contemporary Russia. This ‘turn’ is examined in the context of the previous development of Russian conservatism, particularly its degradation into imitational bureaucratic conservatism in the second half of the nineteenth century. I argue that this ‘new conservatism’ in contemporary Russian politics reflects this degradation and is, in fact, a pseudo-conservatism which h…

Nietzsche und Homer
Foundations of a Philosophical Theory of Exceptions
The article presents the largely neglected ‘alternative’ history of the philosophical notion of exception, from Ancient Rome till the late 19th century, illustrated by Cicero, Leibniz, Kant, Hegel, Kierkegaard and Nietzsche. While arguing against the common narrow view on exceptions as a political concept (following Carl Schmitt and others), the analysis lays out the much-needed historical foundation for a potential broad theory of exception, sti…
Nietzsche’s concept of man from an (anti-)anthropological point of view
Philosophy of Hannah Arendt in Russia
Nihilism and the Crisis of Tradition
The present paper is a preliminary approach to the question of the applicability of Hannah Arendt’s ideas on tradition and nihilism to the analysis of contemporary radical conservatism. For this purpose, I examine Arendt’s essays of the 1940s and 1950s which shed light on the origins of the European conservatism crisis, and the difference between traditionalist and anti-traditionalist thinking. These arguments on the nihilistic aspects of radical…
The Revolutionary Transformation of the Public Realm
The paper examines the relation between the public realm and revolution, the two central concepts of Hannah Arendt’s political philosophy. This relation plays a key role in Arendt’s theory of revolution, since the key purpose of a revolution is the liberation from oppression and the achievement of freedom, and the destruction of an old political realm and the creation of a new one, both of which are needed for the manifestation of free action. Th…
The Philosopher and the State
My paper provides a critical analysis of the epistemic, moral, social, and political implications of Arendt’s view of the Socratic method. In both her earlier (1954) and later (1974) lectures on Socrates, Arendt depicts him as a thinker who overcomes the gap between the contemplative life of a philosopher and the life of an active citizen. Arendt contrasts the Socratic dialog of equal opinions which takes place between friends with the Platonic m…
The public realm and revolution
