Образы Богоматери Царицы в римской живописи VIII века
The paper is dedicated to the study of the Maria Regina iconography in Rome. The representations of Mary as Queen are well-attested in the West, yet they are extremely rare in the art of the Eastern Mediterranean. Notwithstanding this fact, the possibility that this iconography originated in the central territories of the Byzantine Empire and perhaps in Constantinople itself cannot be ruled out entirely. In fact, the similarities in the dipiction…
Mosaic Decoration of the San Venanzio Chapel in the Laterаn Baptistery in Rome
The present contribution is focused on analysis of the mosaic decoration in the chapel of St Venatius (San Venanzio), adjacent to the Lateran Baptistery in Rome. The rich cycle unfolding on the walls of the chapel combines several visual motifs. Particularly noteworthy is the representation in the apse that brings together the image of the orant Virgin and a group of saints, who form a row of figures. This row continues on the outer walls of the …
The Murano Diptych. An Early Byzantine Ivory Book Cover
The paper is dedicated to the ivory cover, commonly referred to in scholarship as the Murano diptych. The name, alluding to one of the Vene- tian islands, derives from an 18 th -century historic record attesting the presence of one of the sides of the cover in a Murano monastery. This part of the diptych was later brought to Ravenna and today is on display at the Ravenna National Museum. The fragments of the other side of the diptych are disperse…
Holy Healers in Rome
The article is dedicated to four saints represented in the Chapel of Holy Physicians in Santa Maria Antiqua church in Rome. Two saints are identified for the first time (Jonas and Procopius), one previously hypothetical identification is confirmed (Barachisius), and the meaning of the cult of St Dometius in Rome is discussed. The hagiographical dossier of Sts Jonas and Barachisius is examined in detail. Based on this examination, it is argued tha…
The Annunciation in Early Christian Art
The paper is dedicated to the earliest formative stages of Annunciation imagery. Although it was widely spread in the Middle Ages, only a few examples of the scene survive from the early Christian period. Judging by the existing material evidence, it can be argued that the image of the Annunciation acquired recognizable and fully-fledged form only in the fifth century. Early examples reveal distinct formative stages of the iconography and the gra…
The Murano Diptych. A Late Nineteenth-Century Quest for Early Byzantine Ivory Cover
The so-called Murano Diptych represents an important example of Early Byzantine ivory carving. The diptych once served as a Gospel book cover decorating both sides of a codex. On the one side, Christ enthroned surrounded by a Christological cycle was represented, while the carved surface of the other side was dedicated to the Mother of God and scenes taken from Apocrypha, narrating the story of Mary’s mother — St. Anne. This paper is dedicated to…
