Three Christian Devotion Meditation (CDM) practices-lectio divina, centering prayer, and the examen-will be offered to aid in coping with ministerial stress and to prevent burnout. CDM or Christian contemplative practices are uniquely suited to develop the emotional resources pastors need for coping with burnout. The office of the pastor faces pressures which can cause burnout and threaten their ministries and personal relationships. The experien…

  • Calling, caring, and connecting

Scott E Dunbar, Scott Dunbar et al.•ARTICLE•Mental Health Religion & Culture•2020

This article explores burnout, and constructs related to burnout, in relation to pastors. Burnout has been found to exist in a multitude of occupations that are service-, or people, oriented. This study examined the relationships between differentiation of self (DoS), religious coping, and subjective well-being in a sample of undergraduate students at a religiously affiliated university. Intrapersonal DoS or the ability to (1) experience emotions, but (2) not be forced to respond to them is an important capacity for self-regulation with important implications for well-being and spiritual maturity. In this study, DoS was a potential me…

  • Orientalism in Outer-space

Scott E Dunbar, Scott Daniel Dunbar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal for the Academic Study of…•2009

Several Hollywood science fiction films have recently appropriated Sanskrit mantras as a prominent feature in their musical soundtracks. Notably, Hollywood’s use of ‘SF Sanskrit’ tends to evoke a sense of militancy and war rather than tranquillity and peace, which has resounding Orientalist connotations. Nevertheless, it will be shown that the correlation between mantras and warfare actually has historical precursors within the Hindu tradition. T…

  • On God and Virtue

    Open Access•Scott E Dunbar, Scott Dunbar•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1982

Philosophy of religion in the twentieth century has been deeply influenced, one might say dominated, by contemporary empiricism. God is the subject of religion, but the word ‘God’ does not name a person or an object in the ordinary way. The word ‘God’ is a symbol for the ultimately mysterious, unknowable and transcedent ground of all being. The insight or conviction, God is, cannot however, be reached within the context of empricism, no matter ho…

  • The Concept of Self

    Open Access•Scott E Dunbar, Scott Dunbar•ARTICLE•Religious Studies•1980

Professor H. D. Lewis' distinguished achievements in philosophy of religion are complemented by his admirable and original contributions to philosophy of mind. His Gifford Lectures, The Elusive Mind , are a model of philosophical clarity and acumen; his account of the elusive mind in the Gifford Lectures is developed and elaborated in a later work, The Self and Immortality . Professor Lewis' ability to connect philosophy of mind with philosophy o…
