Moral Dilemmas and the God of Christianity: Philosophical‐Theological Investigations
My central contention is that Christian ethics should rule out the possibility of genuine moral dilemmas, where “moral dilemma” signifies a situation in which all courses of action available to an agent are morally wrong. The reason for the exclusion is that the existence of a genuine moral dilemma would signify a conflict in the divine will that confirms, warrants, or constitutes moral requirement according to Christian ethics. A genuine moral d…
The N eo‐ B arthian Critique of R einhold N iebuhr
The author notes an unclarity in D avid N ovak's defense of R einhold N iebuhr against S tanley H auerwas's critique and identifies some issues left unsettled in the exchange between N ovak and H auerwas over N iebuhr's ethics. Specifically, the author proposes that the B arthian‐ H auerwasian communitarian rejection of N iebuhrian natural theology and natural law ignores the historical abuse of biblical theology in the G erman C hristian respons…
Global Justice After the Fall Christian Realism and the “Law of Peoples”
In The Law of Peoples John Rawls casts his proposals as an argument against what he calls “political realism.” Here, I contend that a certain version of “Christian political realism” survives Rawls's polemic against political realism sans phrase and that Rawls overstates his case against political realism writ large. Specifically, I argue that Rawls's dismissal of “empirical political realism” is underdetermined by the evidence he marshals in sup…
Religion, the Constitution and Rawlsian Justice: A Critical Analysis of David A. J. Richards on the Religion Clauses
What sort of relation between religion and government does the Constitution of the United States affirm? As anyone even remotely familiar with the subject will know, this question is large as well as enormously complex and invites reflection on a host of subsidiary problems: What are the precise meanings of the religion clauses of the Constitution's first amendment, clauses which proscribe congressional legislation “respecting an establishment of…
