  • Corridos and la pura verdad

Open Access•Jose Pablo Villalobos, Juan Carlos Ramírez-Pimienta•ARTICLE•South Central Review•2004

The Mexican ballad, or corrido is often considered a genre that expresses the notion of "truth" as perceived by its authors and consumers. This essay offers a reading of the corrido that denies this idea of transparency while looking at what the corrido itself contributes to its own definition. First we look at various popular conceptions of what the corrido is thought to accomplish, then we offer an analysis of the self-referential ballad by Los…

    Magali Velasco, Jose Pablo Villalobos•ARTICLE•Callaloo•2003

The Père Lachaise cemetery is older and larger than the one at Montparnasse. Vous êtes ici: an arrow points out that you are at the entrance to the rue Ménilmontant. Carlos takes down the names of people and the coordinates to their location, Rossana turns the map around trying unsuccessfully to find herself. You watch them. The fifth day in Paris, a cloudy day, you are the only visitors within view, maybe inside there are more people lost amid c…

Luis Arturo Ramos, Jose Pablo Villalobos•ARTICLE•Callaloo•2003

On top of being tidy and diligent, Othón knows the ins and the outs of the restaurant he works in like the palms of his hands. Nimble and thin like a transoceanic clipper, he flows through the congested routes of the establishment carrying provisions without ever breaking the subtlety of his smile. He skirts the capes of the bar and overcomes the archipelago of tables. He crosses gulfs, navigates the peninsulas and without warning, like the fulfi…

  • You Were a Better Liar in Paris

    Rafael Antunez, Jose Pablo Villalobos•ARTICLE•Callaloo•2003

She was very tall and I am usually not to the liking of such women, despite Diego's notion that the tall ones prefer shorter men. I am more the type they repel. Besides being short, my hair is very straight and yellow and my eyes are a dull blue, all of which gives me a certain evil air that intimidates the opposite sex. Carlos says I am an angel with a dirty face and insists that I look like James Cagney. Truth be told, I am a good person and if…

There are many descriptors one may use to characterize Mexican literature, but the feature of contemporary literature commonly cited focuses on the split between "provincial" and "central" literary production. In the arts and culture in general, Mexico is a centralized pyramid structure which makes demands on the writer and other artists. For example, to achieve national status, the Mexican author must not only be read in Mexico City, the country…

  • Carlos Fuentes

    Jose Pablo Villalobos•ARTICLE•Mexican Studies/Estudios Mexicanos•2000

Nearing fifty years as a public figure in world literature, Carlos Fuentes has witnessed many a literary fashion. For the most part, however, his work has maintained a constant preoccupation with specific themes such as time, history, and national identity, that in varying degrees can be seen from Los dias enmascarados (1954) all the way to Los anos con Laura Diaz (1999) and beyond.1 The texts reviewed here chronologically represent some of the m…
