now ploughs through the river and awakens you with a warbling breeze It is the barge's siren returning from up river overflowing with bunches of yellow freckled bananas and bouquets of fragrant medlars On the stocks of the dock the men unload baskets with roaming flavors melons [End Page 999] enormous gourds that will someday measure thirst watermelons emphatic like a judge's sentence And the clamorous dawn lays its stall full of aromas traversing the night to arrive with dazzling wide open eyes And the river you thought lost to the estuary like a shark run aground dreamt of taking you by the hand whispering in your ear like a tepa tree at midday like a naughty elf at midnight (the kind that throws rocks at the neighbor and attracts curses from the rooftops upon waking the cawing of sorrowful birds) And that river never ends for it is tributary of your fortune and it goes with you where ever you go without you ever knowing that it is the one who turns your eyelids inside out so you may see what you did as a child oh wonderous things with enormous eyes enraptured Look at it: it takes you by the hand through all its winding nooks and the two villages cradled on its shores unsettled eye you with resentment And that river never ends for it is tributary of your fortune and it climbed through a honeysuckle to the sky to the promised land that blossoms [End Page 1000] when the eyelids close or the eyes drown in their vertigo and they become voluptuous thought garden planted with delights corncob lost of all its kernels turned glass spherules and coral beads
