  • Terminology of the transuranium elements

    Glenn T Seaborg•ARTICLE•Terminology International Journal…•1994

Beginning in 1940, the Periodic Table of the Elements has been expanded by nearly 20% through the synthesis and identification of the seventeen elements beyond uranium (atomic number 92). Since the discoverers have the duty and right to propose names, this has been done for each of these elements. These proposed names have been endorsed by IUPAC for the first eleven of these elements (atomic numbers 93-103, inclusive), and thus these can be consi…

  • The Prospective Change in Life Style Signaled by the Energy Crunch

    Glenn T Seaborg•ARTICLE•Public Administration Review•1975

Some speculations on expected changes in life style sparked by the energy dilemma are discussed. The future (1995) general outlook will be a synthesis of ideas coming out of today's low technology communes and high technology industries, and will be more functional and less possessive. A basic change will be creation of the recycle society in which secondary materials (waste and scrap) will be major resources and the untapped natural resources wi…

  • Energy and environment

    Glenn T Seaborg•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1972

The world today is faced with the increasingly difficult dilemma of generating sufficient energy, expecially electric energy, to satisfy its rapidly growing needs while at the same time restoring and preserving its natural environment. Among the various alternatives, the fossil fuel (mainly coal) and nuclear (fission) sources are the only major possibilities for meeting the requirements during the next few decades. The nuclear source has the adva…
