The Vagina Dentata: A Case for Unlocking Mouths, Loosing Hips, and Spreading the Gospel of Healing Women's Sexual Performance Anxiety
This article explores how vagina dentata folklore—stories and imagery about a mythical "toothed vagina"—connects to the ways Black religious communities often cultivate silence around women’s sexual lives, particularly within the “Worth the Wait” and Word of Faith movements. Ignited by womanist religious ethnographer Monique Moultrie’s scholarship on sexual silence in these movement, I take seriously the musicological chasm by exploring how these…
Decoding the language of first impressions: Comparing models of first impressions of faces derived from free‐text descriptions and trait ratings
First impressions formed from facial appearance predict important social outcomes. Existing models of these impressions indicate they are underpinned by dimensions of Valence and Dominance, and are typically derived by applying data reduction methods to explicit ratings of faces for a range of traits. However, this approach is potentially problematic because the trait ratings may not fully capture the dimensions on which people spontaneously asse…

Mapping physical characteristics in face images to social judgements
Sutherland and Young (Br. J. Psychol., 113, 2022, 1056) provide a comprehensive and timely overview of recent developments in research on social judgements of faces, emphasizing the utility of data-driven approaches. Here, we expand on this theme, focusing on how data-driven approaches can provide new insights into the physical characteristics in face images that best predict social judgements
What Does Women’s Facial Attractiveness Signal? Implications for an Evolutionary Perspective on Appearance Enhancement
Co-authored contributing in particular to the section Understanding Appearance Enhancement in the Digital Domain. Models of appearance enhancement have typically focused on explaining the motivation behind appearance-enhancement behaviors as they apply to face-to-face, real-world interactions. However, with increasing amounts of social interaction taking place online, models of appearance enhancement will also need to be able to account for the r…
Which Facial Features Are Central in Impression Formation
Which facial characteristics do people rely on when forming personality impressions? Previous research has uncovered an array of facial features that influence people’s impressions. Even though some (classes of) features, such as resemblances to emotional expressions or facial width-to-height ratio (fWHR), play a central role in theories of social perception, their relative importance in impression formation remains unclear. Here, we model faces …
The Music Industry Funds Private Prisons”: Analyzing Hip-Hop Urban Legend
Black love and hip-hop brought Calvin Taylor Skinner and me together in 2018 as we nurtured a commuter relationship between Knoxville and Bloomington, Indiana. During our five-to six-hour drives, I talked about my research on musical masculinity, while my theologian-activist guy shared provocative YouTube videos and podcasts facilitated by hip-hop sages to stir conversation.1 The sages self-identify variously as Pan-African, American descendants …

Flaming: The Peculiar Theopolitics of Fire and Desire in Black Male Gospel Performance
Prompted by the popular term "flaming" that is used to identify over-the-top or peculiar performance of identity, Flaming? argues that male African American gospel singers wield and interweave a variety of multivalent aural-visual cues, including vocal style, gesture, attire, and homiletics, to position themselves along a spectrum of gender identities. These multisensory enactments empower artists (i.e., "peculiar people") to demonstrate modes of…
Personality in faces: Implicit associations between appearance and personality
How accurate are the spontaneous trait inferences made to faces? Here we measured implicit associations between facial appearance and personality traits, using faces conveying objective appearances of Extraversion and Agreeableness. In the standard or “uncrossed” conditions of Experiment 1, we found that descriptions of high and low Agreeableness and Extraversion were spontaneously and accurately associated with their objective trait appearance. …
