Dynamic-Based Limit Analysis for Seismic Assessment of Free-Standing Walls of San Giovanni Church in Castelseprio Unesco World Heritage Site
Free-standing archaeological walls are significantly exposed to horizontal actions (e.g., earthquakes) as they lack connections provided by floors or roofs. In such cases, the dynamic response governs the activation of local mechanisms of collapse, determining the shape of the macroblocks and their position. Engineering models of archaeological walls are developed according to the results of extensive visual inspections and on-site testing, inclu…
Lo scavo di Via Dinka Dokule nel quadro della storia della città di Arbe/Rab (Croazia)
Between 2016 and 2018 and in agreement with the University of Zagreb and the Croatian Ministry of Culture, the University of Padua carried out an archaeological excavation in the Dinka Dokule street of the urban center of Rab . The documented sequence, between late antiquity and the sixteenth century, has been divided into nine main periods. In this contribution the first four are considered: (1) late Roman stratigraphy (4th-5th century); (2) fou…
The Late Antique Suburban Complex of Santa Giustina in Padua (North Italy): New Datings and New Interpretations of some Architectural Elements
New research was recently conducted on the medieval remains of the religious complex of Santa Giustina in Padua (Italy) within the framework of the project ArchiDate. The latter, funded by the University of Padua, gathered scientists from the fields of art history, archaeology, material science and archaeometric dating of building materials. After several decades of debates, the chronological framework for two key ancient structures of the comple…
Evaluating Participatory Practice In archaeology: Proposal for a standardized approach
In this paper we present a proposal for the creation of a standardized evaluation model for participatory/public/community archaeology and heritage initiatives. The proposal is the result of discussions during a Spring School that the University of Padua and the MAG Museum of Alto Garda, Italy, organized between 9 and 15 April 2018. The Spring School brought together international practitioners to compare experiences and share visions for the sus…
Roman brick production technologies in Padua (Northern Italy) along the Late Antiquity and Medieval Times: Durable bricks on high humid environs
Production technologies of Roman to Medieval times bricks on the city of Padua were addressed by means of a multi-analytical approach, consisting in Spectrophotometry, X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD), Polarized Optical Microscopy (POM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDS). The Early-Christian (5-6th centuries) and Romanesque (12-13th centuries) areas of the Basilica of Saint Justine of Padua (5/6-16th centuries), a…
Il vescovo Odelrico (1064-1080), la cattedrale e la chiesa di Santa Sofia di Padova
Odelrico, bishop of Padua from 1064 to 1080, a victim of poisonous attacks during his life and after his violent death, tried to secure leadership in a society torn by the struggle for investitures and local conflicts. In addition to the “inventio” of s. Daniele, in the suburban church of Santa Giustina, according to recent research he probably promoted the renewal of the cathedral and of the other Paduan churches. Among these churches, in terms …

Selecting the Most Reliable 14 C Dating Material Inside Mortars: The Origin of the Padua Cathedral
In order to radiocarbon ( 14 C) date a building, several components of the mortar could be used, such as the mortar binder, the lime lumps, the charcoal particles and shell fragments eventually present among the aggregates. In particular, the mortar binder requires a purification treatment in order to separate it from other sources of carbon, which could change the 14 C signature of the binder invalidating the dating process. Here, we present the…
Heart of darkness: An interdisciplinary investigation of the urban anthropic deposits of the Baptistery of Padua (Italy)
Polar Opposites: The Legislative Management of Archaeological Research in Italy and England and the Challenge of Public Participation
Public participation in archaeological research is interpreted in various ways in different European states. Even though public participation is promoted by international organizations (e.g. UNESCO and Council of Europe) and the academic community, the extent to which the practitioners can implement these ideas is a matter of what is allowed (or encouraged) by cultural heritage legislation in every country, and of archaeologists' attitudes toward…

The Control of Public Space and the Transformation of an Early Medieval Town: A Re-Examination of the Case of Brescia
In the town of Brescia, Roman buildings and the urban infrastructure remained relatively intact until the 6th c. However, during the 6th and 7th c., the town underwent a series of transformations. Focusing on the eastern part of the city, this paper examines the transformations that occurred within monumental public buildings and domestic buildings, the appearance of artisanal activities in the urban area, and of burials in zones of residential o…
L'archeologia dell'architettura in Italia nell'ultimo quinquennio (1997-2001)
