  • Perfect Virtue in Simonides’ Ode to Scopas

    Elena Irrera•ARTICLE•The Classical World•2022

In this paper I explore some philosophical underpinnings of perfect virtue in Simonides’ Ode to Scopas, an ideal which Socrates discusses in Plato’s Protagoras. In the first place, I argue that Socrates is right in identifying in the Simonidean poem a distinction between “being virtuous” and “becoming virtuous.” Then, I contend that Simonides’ perfectly virtuous man conveys not only an idea of moral rigour but also adaptability to different circu…

  • Amistad, ēthos e igualdad en la discusión aristotélica de las politeiai democráticas

    Open Access•Elena Irrera•ARTICLE•Araucaria•2022

  • The Roots of Respect

Open Access•Giovanni Giorgini, Elena Irrera•BOOK•The Roots of Respect•2017

Despite the increasing concern for the issue of respect for persons displayed over the last decades by political philosophers, human-right thinkers, social and ethical theorists, a comprehensive treatment of the problem at stake from a historical-philosophical perspective is conspicuously absent. The present collection of essays aims to contribute to the fulfillment of this gap by offering a reconstruction of the seminal passages in the history o…

  • Being a Good Ruler in a Deviant Community

Elena Irrera•ARTICLE•Polis The Journal for Ancient…•2010•Cited by: 1

In Politics III, 4.1277a15–16 Aristotle presents phronēsis as the characteristic excellence of the good ruler. Difficulties arise when we consider that, on his view, a good ruler should always be loyal to his constitution (Politics V, 9.1309a34), even when its prescriptions are contrary to moral goodness. This paper investigates the condition of a wise ruler in imperfect communities by attempting to answer the following questions: (i) Would a wis…
