In this article, I revisit Harold Garfinkel's classic ethnomethodological account of Agnes, a transgender woman he met in the 1950s. I situate this case in its larger historical context, within the arc of a contemporary transgender studies, and incorporate recent material from bio‐neuro‐cultural studies of gender and sexuality. Within this framework I ask: what can ethnomethodology learn from transgender studies and what can it contribute

Human social life is messy, and as a result the practice of sociology is filled with tension, contradiction, conflict, and ambiguity. As a discipline, sociology has generated excellent theories and methodologies for dealing with this complexity. This presidential address suggests that the impact and resonance of sociological knowledge is enhanced further when we open ourselves to the tensions and contradictions we experience personally in our wor…

Clashes of Christianity and sexuality have been front page news contenders for the past several months. Recently, a handful of U.S. Catholic Bishops indicated that they intend to take seriously a missive from the Pope stating that Catholics who disagree with church teaching on matters of abortion and same-sex marriage should not receive Holy Communion. In one extreme case, a Denver Bishop has proclaimed that Catholics who vote for politicians who…

  • Wrestling the Angel of contradiction

    Jodi O’brien•ARTICLE•Culture and Religion•2004•Cited by: 40•References: 4

This ethnographically based article is about the ways in which individuals who choose to remain in mainstream Christian denominations while being out about their sexuality make sense of and manage the presumed discontinuity of homosexuality and Christianity. In this article I focus specifically on the processes whereby lesbian and gay Christians forge an integration of Christian doctrine, spirituality and sexuality. My central interpretive claim …

Current research, science fiction, and wishful thinking suggest that cyberspace will be a realm in which physical markers such as sex, race, age, body type, and size will eventually lose their salience as a basis for the categorization of self/other. Because these features are not obviously discernible in cyberspace, the logic runs, they will cease to be a primary means of structuring interaction. Here is a typically hopeful expression of the pot…
