  • Affective experiences and expressions in institutional context

    Christine Finnan•ARTICLE•Ethnography & Education•2022•References: 10

The 22,500 Indigenous students attending an Indian boarding school sacrifice living with family to essentially grow up in an institutional setting, in part to receive free education but also because they believe in the school’s promise of a bright future. In this context, students’ affective expressions and experiences are moulded by an all-enveloping institutional environment. The article relies on two concepts, ‘institutions of hope’ and ‘total…

  • Living in the present while imagining the future

Open Access•Christine Finnan, Sasmita Sahoo et al.•ARTICLE•Global Studies of Childhood•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This article builds on Allison James and Alan Prout’s call to focus more on theorizing the social construction of time in childhood and explores how school, as an organization and an experience, influences students’ conceptions of childhood and experiences of being a child. Extending the conception of time of childhood to include their future projections, we assert that aspiring to become an adult, while seeming to diminish the experience of chil…

The bias is especially great for students who struggle to perform academically. The article reflects on the importance of teacher effects on stu…

  • Community Influences on the Occupational Adaptation of Vietnamese Refugees

    Christine Finnan, Christine R Finnan•ARTICLE•Anthropological Quarterly•1982•Cited by: 2

The economic integration of refugees is a primary goal of refugee resettlement policy. Most people encourage refugees to enter the labor market as quickly as possible, but few agree on the best route to employment. Some people encourage refugees to work immediately, taking any available job, while others counsel refugees to enroll in job training immediately in hopes of starting with a better job. The paper describes the occupational adaptation o…
