  • Musical Metaphors and Epistemes: The Case of the Classical Style in the Austria of the Empress Maria Teresa

    Open Access•Eero Tarasti•ARTICLE•Roczniki Humanistyczne•2024

  • Krzysztof Penderecki: An Existential Semiotic Study of His Sonoristic Works and Cello and Orchestra Concerto No. 2

    Open Access•Eero Tarasti•ARTICLE•Roczniki Humanistyczne•2024

This paper presents the first application of semiotic theories by Eero Tarasti—and particularly of the so-called existential semiotics—to the music by the avant-garde composer Krzysztof Penderecki. Using the zemic analysis of four works: Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, Anaklasis, Fluorescences and Cello Concerto No. 2, the author shows the connection of music—albeit it be as ‘absolute’ as ever—to a certain fundamental semantics, which is pr…

  • An Essay on Rhythm

    Open Access•Eero Tarasti•ARTICLE•Revista Acta Semiotica•2022

Rhythm is a universal phenomenon : it appears on ontological level in the different theories of temporality ; on the other hand, it is an empirical phenomenon to be studied in diverse concrete cases. Rhythm appears either in the utterance (énoncé) or in the act of uttering (énonciation). If we apply this to music, it means that rhythm can be written down in the score, or manifested in the performance. Rhythm is a corporeal entity, a psychological…

  • Du Flâneur au traceur: Playful bodies in urban spaces

    Open Access•Mattia Thibault, Eero Tarasti•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2022•References: 10

This paper investigates how play practices affect players’ relationships with the urban environment through the bodily movement and performances that characterize them. Building on a definition of playful behavior derived by semiotics of culture, we investigate urban play from the perspective of motor praxology to outline how movement is central for the experience of the players. We then concentrate on the role of semiotic valorizations in differ…

  • The semiotics of A. J. Greimas: A European intellectual heritage seen from the inside and the outside

    Open Access•Eero Tarasti•ARTICLE•Sign Systems Studies•2017•Cited by: 1

The essay deals with the formation of the Greimassian thought from its earliest origins in his young years at Kaunas University, i.e. his connections with Wilhelm Sesemann, Lev Karsavin and Russian formalism, to the rise of structuralism in Paris. The Paris School approach stems from Sémantique structurale (1967) leading to the ‘third semiotic revolution’, as Greimas called it, by the invention of the modalities. This made his method close to eve…

  • Sein und Schein: Explorations in Existential Semiotics

    Eero Tarasti•BOOK•Sein und Schein•2015

Existential semiotics is a new paradigm in the studies of signs, signification and communication. This book develops its theory further starting from the continental philosophy (Kant, Hegel, Jaspers, Heidegger, Arendt, Sartre) on one hand, yet remaining also faithful to the tradition of the European semiotics, particularly the Paris school. From the notions of being, doing and appearing the study applies them to crucial social problems of the con…

  • Victoria Lady Welby – A pioneer of semiotic thought rediscovered by Susan Petrilli

    Open Access•Eero Tarasti•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2013

Victoria Lady Welby dealt with all the major philosophical questions relevant to herself and to her environment. She also came to write about subjectivity and difference among I, Me, and Self as well as about transcendence. In that sense she is extremely “modern,” perhaps even au courant. Susan Petrilli's great work has rescued from oblivion an important scholar of the past, a pioneer in the history of the semiotic movement, whose thought provoke…

  • Semiotics of resistance: Being, memory, history - the counter-current of signs

    Open Access•Eero Tarasti•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2009•Cited by: 1•References: 2

This article focuses on ‘resistance’ and the role that semiotics has to play in it. It posits resistance through the lens of ‘existential semiotics’ (Tarasti, Existential Semiotics, Indiana University Press, 2000), based on Greimas but also including a lineage comprising Bergson, Aron, von Wright, Ricoeur and Elias, and ultimately back to Hegel in mapping the logics of ‘transcendence’. As illustrative cases, the essay analyses the aesthetics of r…

  • Metaphors of nature and organicism in the epistemology of music: A "biosemiotic" introduction to the analysis of Jean Sibelius' symphonic thought

    Open Access•Eero Tarasti•ARTICLE•Sign Systems Studies•2001

Metaphors of nature and organism play a central role in the epistemes of the Western culture and arts. The entire project of the 'modern' meant a separation of man from the cosmos and its laws. Signs and symbols are thought to be arbitrary and conventional social constructions. However, there are many returns to iconic imitations of nature and biological principles also in such an esoteric art as music. One of the highest aesthetic categories in …

    On post-colonial semiotics

  • The implicit musical semiotics of Marcel Proust

    Eero Tarasti•ARTICLE•Contemporary Music Review•1997

Because of his awareness that the surface of every narration is a tissue of signs, Proust is able to present a semiotic analysis of musical enunciation in his description (in La prisonnière) of a performance of the fictional Septet by Vinteuil. He shows music as a fait social total, in which the enunciate is in dialogue with the enunciation; and thus he discusses different ways of listening, different aspects of the composer as man and as musical…
