Bridging gaps between theory and practice of inclusive teacher education
Disability studies in and for inclusive teacher education in Aotearoa New Zealand
In inclusive education, Disability Studies is a framework that has been useful for identifying gaps in theory, in practice and the spaces in between. Disability Studies in Education also provides new spaces in which to manoeuvre, re-framing theory, reflecting on and (potentially) shifting practice in classrooms, schools, and national policies and guidelines. In this paper three teacher educators and a school principal describe their work in under…
Improving program implementation and client engagement in interventions addressing youth homelessness
Evidence on the effectiveness of programs serving unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness remains limited and mixed, and we know little about the factors that contribute to participant engagement and program implementation across contexts. In this meta-synthesis of current findings on youth interventions, we explore the following research questions: (1) What are common programmatic or contextual factors that researchers and/or practitioners…
Understanding Wait Times in Rapid Re-Housing Among Homeless Youth
Prevalence and Correlates of Homelessness Among American Indian and Alaska Native Youth
Prevalence and Correlates of Youth Homelessness in the United States
PURPOSE: Unaccompanied youth homelessness is a serious concern. Response, however, has been constrained by the absence of credible data on the size and characteristics of the population and reliable means to track youth homelessness over time. We sought to address these gaps. METHODS: Using a nationally representative phone-based survey (N = 26,161), we solicited household and individual reports on different types of youth homelessness. We collec…

Youth Homelessness and Vulnerability
Highlights We report results regarding youth couch surfing and homelessness from a national survey. Youth couch surfing is a common experience, although far more so for young adults than adolescents. There are notable differences between youth reporting homelessness versus only couch surfing. Couch surfing encompasses a range of experiences, some of which likely include need for services. Broader assessments of youths’ housing situation beyond po…
Risk Factors for Men’s Lifetime Perpetration of Physical Violence against Intimate Partners
This paper examines men's lifetime physical intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration across eight low- and middle-income countries to better understand key risk factors that interventions can target in order to promote gender equality and reduce IPV. We use data from men (n = 7806) that were collected as part of the International Men and Gender Equality Survey (IMAGES) in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, Croatia, Democratic Republic of …

Introduction to the special issue – making inclusive education happen
Youth Empowerment Programs for Improving Adolescents’ Self-Efficacy and Self-Esteem
Objectives: Assess the state of evidence regarding impacts of youth empowerment programs (YEPs) on adolescents’ (ages 10–19) self-efficacy and self-esteem, as well as other social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes. Method: Systematic searches of databases combined with an international outreach to identify experimental or quasi-experimental trials of community interventions that regularly involved youths in decision making. Results: Of the 8,78…

Kinds of participation
This paper presents narratives from two parents about the exclusion of their disabled children within early childhood and primary school settings. Interpretations of particular ‘kinds of participation’ that appear to be accepted as inclusive are explored. We argue that these interpretations have disabling effects on the children's learning and participation. We critique participation that is interpreted as ‘presence’, ‘fitting in’, and ‘irrelevan…
Silenced in the court
In this paper I report a qualitative study of a series of court decisions concerning the meanings of science and the gold standard of special education research. I describe two sets of court proceedings and subsequent decisions that considered the admissibility of statements purportedly given by disabled children using a strategy known as facilitated communication. The legal decisions focused on the admissibility of novel scientific evidence. I d…
Disability studies and inclusive education — implications for theory, research, and practice
This paper serves as a broad introduction to Disabilities Studies in Education (DSE). The emergence of DSE over the last decade has resulted in a vibrant area of academic scholarship as well as a critical forum for social/educational advocacy and activism. First, the authors trace the roots of DSE in the growth of disability studies (DS) within the UK and the USA. Second, they describe the formation of international networks dedicated to DSE. Thi…
Bridging two worlds
In a report to the Aotearoa New Zealand Ministry of Education entitled Curriculum Policy and Special Education Support (2004 Ministry of Education. 2004. Curriculum/Marautanga project, Wellington: Ministry of Education. Issue 1 [Google Scholar]), the team of writers noted the lack of collaboration between experts in these two fields. This paper explores the apparently separate worlds of special education and curriculum policy in order to develop …

Research into the literacy of Pasifika (Pacific Island) children has predominantly focused on what the children cannot do. We present a layered account as we report on the issues, strategies and learnings from a project that set out to focus on success. With the guidance of matai (chiefs) we drew on the traditional Pasifika approach of Talanoa to allow important stories to be told. Talanoa both supports and challenges traditional and alternative …
Regimes of Trustworthiness in Qualitative Research
In this article, the authors explore the relationships between trustworthiness and reciprocity in qualitative research: What new questions about trustworthiness arise when we view qualitative research through the lens of reciprocity? Every stage of the research process relies on our negotiating complex social situations. Participants are active in this process, and reciprocity occurs at many different levels. In this article, the authors problema…
