Bien venu et Adieu, mon amy: Expressions figurées et elliptiques pour ouvrir et clore une conversation en 1527
The article analyzes the three conversations in the 1527 version of Noel van Barlainmont’s Dutch-French conversation manual with regard to these questions: (1) What types of address forms are used? (2) What types of opening and closing greetings are used? (3) Are there any pragmaticalized formulas (a. figurative, b. semantically void, c. shortened)? It can be seen that there are figurative and shortened phrases in constructions with modified echo…
Eurolinguistic Notes on Polish, German, Czech, Hungarian, Dutch, English, French, Italian, Spanish and Latin in Warmer’s Late-17th-c. Colloquy. Part 2: Address Forms and Expressive Speech Act Routines
Warmer’s 1691 colloquy including ten languages – (Silesian) Polish, (Silesian) German, (eastern) Czech, (northern) Hungarian, (Flemish) Dutch, (northern) French, Italian, Spanish, English and Latin – is studied qualitatively and descriptively for the typical European character of address forms and routine formulae in expressive speech acts. All vernacular languages except Dutch are languages with an informal/formal (T/V) address pronoun distincti…
Climatic Conditions and Lexis: Some Diachronic Notes on Weather‐Related Words in English and Other European Languages
Focusing on metalinguistic sources and passages with words from the conceptual field of weather in cooccurrence (and including language contrasts), the study analyses whether changes in weather‐related lexemes in English language history, particularly words for “weather, condition of the air,” “cloud,” and “mist,” may be related to climatic conditions. This is supported for the following cases: (1) the use of the lexeme for “weather” in the sense…
Linguistic impact of coronavirus on online service offers in Spain as well as France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and the UK
Service offers from online platforms in Spain, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UK since the COVID-19-related lockdowns in March 2020 are analyzed and related to classical pragmatic nomenclatures. As a result, COVID-19-related lexemes are used particularly in Spain, hardly in the Netherlands, and to a medium degree in Germany, France, Italy, and the UK. Often, such phrases are expressive/phatic, occasionally with an appea…

On the Connection between Countries’ Onomasiological and Ecological Behavior
Five onomasiological features in EU countries are statistically compared to environmental performances of these countries (in selected years) by way of Welch’s t-tests and Cohen’s d. The analyses show, for years with statistically significant results, that national energy use is smaller when the environment is onomasiologically “middle/central” than when it is onomasiologically “around”, the national ecological footprint of one year is smaller wh…

On the correlation between socioeconomics and policies of languages in official contexts

The didactic model LdL (Lernen durch Lehren) as a way of preparing students for communication in a knowledge society
Based on studies in learning psychology, biology and education, the original technique Lernen durch Lehren (LdL) (German for ‘learning by teaching’) has been elaborated into a meta‐model (Meta)LdL that aims at giving students a platform to acquire the competencies considered necessary for knowledge societies. Ninety‐seven former students of university classes modelled on (Meta)LdL participated in a questionnaire to determine the effectiveness and…

On using (and misusing) prototypes for explanations of lexical changes
The article briefly reviews a number of works dealing with prototype theory in historical lexicology, especially generalization and specialization of meaning. By analyzing multiple examples from a semasiological and an onomasiological perspective it is shown that the roles of prototypes and prototypical meanings are sometimes overestimated. Apart from illustrating that it is possible to distinguish at least two sorts of prototypes ("real-world" p…

Some aspects of modern diachronic onomasiology
The following contribution calls attention to the fact that cognitive linguistics has already had its effects on historical semasiology, but hardly on historical onomasiology. Although certain modern linguistic concepts can be detected in the literature of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, it is the merit of cognitive linguistics to put them into a certain systemization. The article dwells on some aspects where further research is …
