The Economics of Attachment: Making a Case for a Relational Approach to Immigrants' Integration in Canada
Social Capital, Employment and Occupational Status of the New Immigrants in Canada
Professional, Critical, Policy, and Public Academics in Canada
This paper analyzes the results of a unique 2000 study of a representative sample of Canadian academics (n=3,318) in order to provide the first empirical assessment of Burawoy’s intellectual types: professional, critical, policy, and public intellectuals. After determining the distribution of academic types in the Canadian professoriate as a whole, the paper demonstrates that academic types fall along a left-right continuum, different fields of s…
Social Capital and Political Participation of Canadians
This paper evaluates the importance of social capital for political participation of native-born Canadians and immigrants. The Survey of Social Engagement in Canada, a large survey of Canadians conducted by Statistics Canada in 2003, is used in order to test the role of social relations and connections in accounting for political participation. Analyses show that although the “usual suspects” play important roles in explaining political activitie…
Universalism, Ascription and Academic Rank: Canadian Professors, 1987–2000
Ethnoracial Origins, Social Capital, and Earnings
Electoral Participation in Municipal, Provincial and Federal Elections in Canada
The purpose of this paper is to highlight the importance of social relations or social capital for voting turnout at three levels of Canadian government, paying particular attention to social contexts, socio-demographics and socio-economic forces. The data source is the Public Use Microdata File from theNational Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participation, administered by Statistics Canada (2001). Results provide support for social capital t…
Gender Differences in Publication among University Professors in Canada
Ethnic and Gender Distribution of Sociologists and Anthropologists, 1971-96: Canada

Self‐control and Resistance to School
Self-Control and Social Control: An Examination of Gender, Ethnicity, Class and Delinquency

The Political Attitudes of Canadian Professors
In this paper we analyze the social determinants of political attitudes among Canadian university professors as expressed in a nationwide 1987 survey. We examine four questionnaire items. They measure attitudes towards faculty unionization, faculty militancy, and faculty salary egalitarianism; and position on a left-right political scale. The results support a class-based theory of intellectual attitudes, more with respect to unionism and leftism…
Effects of Class Positions of Parents on Educational Attainment of Daughters and Sons

Asymmetry And Symmetry Of Conjugal Violence
General theory and research on conjugal violence have been generated around two empirical assumptions: first, that males are significantly more likely to engage in conjugal violence than females (the asymmetry assumption); and, se.:ondly, that this pattern is relatively stable over the life-course. These assumptions are problematic for two reasons. Recent research has demonstrated greater gender symmetry in conjugal violence than previously belie…
Vertical Mosaic among the Elites: The New Imagery Revisited
Class Position, Class Ideology and Class Voting: Mobilization of Support for the New Democratic Party in the Canadian Election of 1984
The Reproduction of Class Relations by Gender in Canada
This paper builds on the research on occupational mobility and class reproduction in Canada and elsewhere by drawing on a national representative sample of Canadians surveyed in 1986. It evaluates the effect of mother's and father's class on class position of male and female Canadians, controlling for education, age, ethnicity, language, and region. The analysis shows that the tendency for class--defined in terms of relations of production and ex…
