General theory and research on conjugal violence have been generated around two empirical assumptions: first, that males are significantly more likely to engage in conjugal violence than females (the asymmetry assumption); and, se.:ondly, that this pattern is relatively stable over the life-course. These assumptions are problematic for two reasons. Recent research has demonstrated greater gender symmetry in conjugal violence than previously believed, and recent theoretical work in criminology has explicitly challenged the stability of such relationships. The present research seeks to further knowledge in this area by examining gender differences in conjugal violence during the life course. The research reveals that, consistent with research about crime among non-intimates, life-course trajectories have a significant impact on violent behaviour between intimates. The analysis shows that there is greater gender asymmetry in conjugal violence among the younger age groups and more symmetry among the older cohorts
