  • Genetic Evidence against a Paleolithic European Contribution to Past or Present Native Americans

    Thomaz Pinotti, Fabrício R Santos•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2020

Modern and ancient genomics have recently ignited new debates in the field of peopling of the Americas, sometimes bringing up some odd scenarios. One of those is the Solutrean hypothesis. We argue that not only is the archaeological evidence supporting it rather tentative, but also it is not possible to reconcile what is known about the genetics of past and present Native Americans with the occurrence of a transatlantic dispersal during the late …

  • Early human dispersals within the Americas

Open Access•J Víctor Moreno-Mayar, Lasse Vinner et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2018

Complex processes in the settling of the Americas The expansion into the Americas by the ancestors of present day Native Americans has been difficult to tease apart from analyses of present day populations. To understand how humans diverged and spread across North and South America, Moreno-Mayar et al. sequenced 15 ancient human genomes from Alaska to Patagonia. Analysis of the oldest genomes suggests that there was an early split within Beringia…

  • A Grande Árvore Genealógica Humana

  • Ancient remains and the first peopling of the A mericas: Reassessing the Hoyo Negro skull

Open Access•Soledad De Azevedo, Maria Cátira Bortolini et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 29

OBJECTIVE: A noticeably well-preserved ∼12.500 years-old skeleton from the Hoyo Negro cave, Yucatán, México, was recently reported, along with its archaeological, genetic and skeletal characteristics. Based exclusively on an anatomical description of the skull (HN5/48), Chatters and colleagues stated that this specimen can be assigned to a set of ancient remains that differ from modern Native Americans, the so called "Paleoamericans". Here, we ai…

  • Distribution of Y‐chromosome q lineages in native americans

    Open Access•Rafael Bisso‐machado, Marilza S Jota et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2011

Objectives: This investigation was performed to identify and evaluate the distribution of all 15 Y‐chromosome lineages belonging to the Q clade in a sample of natives from South America. Methods: One hundred and forty‐eight individuals from 20 Native American populations, as well as 24 Asian samples including Eskimos, were tested with 18 biallelic loci that can identify all currently known lineages of the Y‐Chromosome Q clade. Sequencing was perf…

  • A new subhaplogroup of native American Y-Chromosomes from the Andes

    Open Access•Marilza S Jota, Daniela R Lacerda et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2011•Cited by: 5•References: 22

The human Y chromosome contains highly informative markers for making historical inferences about the pre-Columbian peopling of Americas. However, the scarcity of these markers has limited its use in the inference of shared ancestry and past migrations relevant to the origin of the culturally and biologically diverse Native Americans. To identify new single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and increase the phylogenetic resolution of the major hapl…

  • The peopling of America: Craniofacial shape variation on a continental scale and its interpretation from an interdisciplinary view

    Open Access•Rolando González‐josé, Maria Cátira Bortolini et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•2008•Cited by: 61•References: 63

Twenty‐two years ago, Greenberg, Turner and Zegura ( Curr. Anthropol. 27,477–495, 1986) suggested a multidisciplinary model for the human settlement of the New World. Since their synthesis, several studies based mainly on partial evidence such as skull morphology and molecular genetics have presented competing, apparently mutually exclusive, settlement hypotheses. These contradictory views are represented by the genetic‐based Single Wave or Out o…

  • Genetic Variation of the Y Chromosome in Chibcha-Speaking Amerindians of Costa Rica and Panama

    Edward A Ruiz-Narváez, Fabrício R Santos et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2005•Cited by: 7•References: 4

Genetic variation of the Y chromosome in five Chibchan tribes (Bribri, Cabecar, Guaymi, Huetar, and Teribe) of Costa Rica and Panama was analyzed using six microsatellite loci (DYS19, DYS389A, DYS389B, DYS390, DYS391, and DYS393), the Y-chromosome-specific alphoid system (alphah), the Y-chromosome Alu polymorphism (YAP), and a specific pre-Columbian transition (C-->T) (M3 marker) in the DYS 199 locus that defines the Q-M3 haplogroup. Thirty-nine …

  • Binary and microsatellite polymorphisms of the Y‐chromosome in the Mbenzele pygmies from the Central African Republic

Open Access•Valentina Coia, A Caglià et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2004

This study analyzes the variation of six binary polymorphisms and six microsatellites in the Mbenzele Pygmies from the Central African Republic. Five different haplogroups (B2b, E(xE3a), E3a, P and BR(xB2b,DE,P)) were observed, with frequencies ranging from 0.022 (haplogroup P) to 0.609 (haplogroup E3a). A comparison of haplogroup frequencies indicates a close genetic affinity between the Mbenzele and the Biaka Pygmies, a finding consistent with …

  • Y-Chromosome Haplotypes in Azoospermic Israeli Men

    Cláudia Carvalho, C M B Carvalho et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2004

Among azoospermic and severely oligozoospermic men, 7-15% present microdeletions of a region on the long arm of the Y chromosome that has been called AZF (azoospermia factor). Because these deletions present varying relative frequencies in different populations, we decided to ascertain whether their presence was correlated with specific Y-chromosome haplotypes. For that, we evaluated 51 infertile Israeli men, 9 of whom had microdeletions in AZF. …
