  • Ruch i bezruch w badaniach literacko-geograficznych nad przejawami życia literackiego w łódzkich kawiarniach – ujęcie metodologiczne

Open Access•Magdalena Lachman, Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny et al.•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2025

The concepts of movement and stillness can be interpreted as categories that reflect the attitudes and modes of activity adopted by scholars across various disciplines, particularly in relation to their research methods. Geographical inquiry-especially fieldwork in cultural geography, which employs techniques such as inventories, photographic documentation, observation, and interviews-necessarily involves the researcher’s physical movement throug…

  • Funkcjonalizacje ruchu i bezruchu w powieściach popularnych dziejących się w przestrzeni Łodzi w XX i XXI wieku. Wybrane przykłady

Open Access•Tomasz Cieślak, Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2025

This article explores the role of movement-both of crowds and individuals, often linked to public transport-in contemporary popular novels set in Łódź during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Particular attention is given to how these representations of movement contribute to the construction of urban space, especially when they depart from the stereotypical portrayal of the modern industrial city as a vast, chaotic, and convulsively …

  • Mapowanie surrealizmu

Open Access•Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny, Magdalena Piotrowska-Grot•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2025

This article examines Surrealism as an artistic movement that, although formally concluded by the 1960s, continues to resonate within contemporary artistic discourse, inspiring both creators and scholars. The discussion foregrounds the paradoxical nature of Surrealism-historically closed yet persistently alive and subject to ongoing redefinitions. Surrealism is approached not merely as a movement but as a creative attitude and a coherent aestheti…

  • Między wzniosłością a niesamowitością. Krajobraz w sekwencjach tytułowych współczesnych seriali kryminalnych

Open Access•Kamila Żyto, Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2024

The article reflects on the title sequences of three noir series set in a winter setting (Trapped, Fortitude and Arctic Circles). In contemporary series, these sequences often function as a trademark and are regarded as separate works of visual art. Interestingly, crime series, especially film noir, turn the landscape, rather than the protagonist or selected plots, into the key component of their opening credits. This element can evoke the landsc…

  • W poszukiwaniu autentycznej Irlandii – o krajobrazach w powieści Kolonia Audrey Magee

Open Access•Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny, Julia Dynkowska•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2024

This article examines Audrey Magee’s novel The Colony, published in Poland in 2024. The author of the article focuses on those parts of the novel that concern the Irish landscape and its inhabitants, as perceived by the novel’s main characters: primarily an English painter, and also a French linguist. In her reflections, she refers to an understanding of the concept of ‘landscape’ related to seeing, painting and also to the Gilpinian picturesque.…

  • Rozważania na marginesie monografii życia i twórczości Aleksandra Grozy. O poematach Melancholia i Kniaźnin

Open Access•Aleksandra Ewelina Mikinka, Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2024

The article compares two poems by Aleksander Groza, a representative of the “Ukrainian school” of Polish Romanticism, which has not yet been the subject of a thorough literary analysis. The first poem, Melancholia. The Mad Poet, is Groz’s debut publication that appeared in the Noworocznik litewski for the year 1831. The second one, Kniaźnin, was included in the first volume of his poetry collection (Poezje, Wilno 1836). The research for Aleksande…

  • Przestrzeń rozłożona w czasie – przypadek Here Richarda McGuire’a

Open Access•Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny, Julia Dynkowska•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2023

The article concerns the experimental graphic novel Here by Richard McGuire, which is a specific attempt to read time in space. The novel consists of a set of boards depicting the same place in New Jersey at different historical moments. In my work, I reflect on the category of chronotope in the comics medium and try to consider to what extent (and if) Here complements or expands understanding of chronotope in this context

  • Tak trudno być matką umarłego”. Tadeusz Konopnicki w korespondencji i twórczości swojej matki

    Open Access•Dorota Samborska-Kukuć, Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2023

The article seeks to reconstruct the portrait of Maria Konopnicka’s first-born son, Tadeusz that emerges from the poet’s letters. According to the author, owing to his gentle nature and predisposition for ill health, out of her six children, he was his mother’s favourite. Tadeusz’s premature death was Konopnicka’s greatest loss. She expressed her despair in the lyric Tu się droga załamała [Here the road has broken], and her premonitions in the no…

  • Magna Mater modernistów – kobiecość archetypiczna i inne aspekty boginiczności w epoce Młodej Polski

Open Access•Aleksandra Ewelina Mikinka, Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2023

The Great Goddess is a figure/idea/deity that has been “resurrected” again and again over the past century and a half, both in the context of various scholarly studies and Western spirituality. The popularity of the concept of the Great Goddess is analyzed from the perspective of various disciplines: psychology, anthropology, history of religion, etc. The origins of this phenomenon – the great return and vindication of the female deity in culture…

  • Od reminiscencji do antecedencji – Kostomarov, Reymont i Orwell. Rekonesans

    Open Access•Barbara Hac-Rosiak, Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2023

Bunt [Revolt] (1924) by Władysław Stanisław Reymont and Animal Farm (1946) by George Orwell display many parallels, probably stemming from the common provenance of the two works, which can be traced to the work Skotskoy bunt [Skotskoj rebellion] (1879) by the Ukrainian writer Nikolai Kostomarov. The works deploy allegory in the construction of dystopian worlds inhabited by animals that rebel against humans. They share a number of motifs, characte…

  • Feministyczne topografie miasta – Neapol Eleny Ferrante

Open Access•Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny, Agnieszka Gawron•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2022

The paper examines the role of Naples in Elena Ferrante’s works. The regional capital of Campania serves here as a topographical frame for the protagonists’ experiences and, at the same time, as a plane onto which Ferrante inscribes fundamental dimensions of her work, related to autobiography, identity, intertextuality and artistic craft. Central to such poetics of space is the inseparable relationship between Naples, women’s experiences and crea…

  • Przestrzenie tęsknoty w wybranych dramatach Jerzego Szaniawskiego

Open Access•Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny, Agnieszka Kowalkiewicz-Kulesza•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2021

The aim of this article is to analyse metaphorical spaces in two dramas by Jerzy Szaniawski: Murzyn. Komedia w trzech aktach [A Negro. A comedy in three acts] from 1917 and Kowal, pieniądze i gwiazdy. Sztuka w trzech aktach [A blacksmith, money, and stars. A play in three acts] from 1948. Drawing attention to the fact that the world presented in most of Szaniawski’s dramas is connected with the province, the author demonstrates how realistic spac…

  • Miasto-moloch. Trwałe składowe kreacji przestrzeni Łodzi w literaturze do 1939 roku

Open Access•Tomasz Cieślak, Uniwersytet Łódzki Wydział Filologiczny•ARTICLE•Białostockie Studia Literaturoznawc…•2021

The article analyzes texts that represent the artistically diverse literary forms which were written in Polish, German, Yiddish, Hebrew and Russian in Łódź before 1939. The author attempts to identify the constitutive elements of the “Łódź text” (based on Toporow’s typography) and seeks similarities in the ways in which space in a modern industrial city is created in the modernist literature. The space of Łódź created before 1939 is discontinuous…
