Certeira é a perspetiva in…
Duas economias singulares
As instituições d…
Individual and School Predictors of Middle School Aggression
Hierarchical linear modeling is used to assess individual student, family, and school predictors of aggression in 111,662 students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Nine measures of problem-solving strategies, quality of family and peer interaction, and perceptions of school climate are analyzed at the individual student level. Eight measures of school climate are included in the analysis at the school level. Aggression is operationalized wit…
Estado, Mercado e Comunidade

A Descriptive Study of African-American Mother-Child Communication about Drugs and Health
A Descriptive Study of African-American Mother-Child Communication about Drugs and Health Parents' teaching styles and values about health shape children's health behaviors and attitudes. Parental influence is particularly salient with their children's use of illegal and addictive drugs. Children from families with open and positive communication are less likely to become involved with drugs than are children form families in which this kind of d…
Black and white adolescent mothers' child-rearing beliefs and behaviors
A convenience sample of 99 Black and 63 White adolescent mothers participated in a study of child-rearing beliefs and behaviors. Attitudes toward child-rearing were assessed using a scale developed for low-income, Black adolescent mothers. The HOME was used by trained observers to record parenting behavior. The Black and White samples were comparable in terms of income, employment status, educa tion, and age. Black mothers were more likely than W…
Multiple Regression with Missing Data
In conducting research, data are frequently missing for some subjects. This article discusses the assumptions and disadvantages of two methods frequently used with missing data, listwise and pairwise deletion, and it proposes the use of a little known alternative method referred to as "coding missing data." These three methods are illustrated using the analysis of a hypothetical data set, and special emphasis is placed on the interpretation of re…

Contraceptive Orientation in Young Inner-City Adolescents
The results of a discriminant analysis on sexual knowledge and attitudes are reported for a sample of 265 Black inner-city adolescents divided according to their contraceptive orientation. Twenty-one percent (56) of the sample stated that they would have sexual intercourse without using any kind of birth control. This group did not differ from their 209 contraceptively oriented peers on knowledge of human sexuality, self-esteem or orientation tow…
Child-rearing expectations and developmental knowledge according to maternal age and parity
A convenience sample of 6% mothers was surveyed according to their attitudes toward childrearing and knowledge of developmental milestones. A majority of mothers, regardless of age, were incorrect in their assessment of when key infant abilities occur. When the responses were analyzed according to age, the youngest group of mothers (16 years and less) were least knowledgeable and had the least desirable child-rearing attitudes of the three age gr…

Causality among Cross-Cultural Correlations
Cross-cultural research has produced a number of problematical cor relations between personality and cultural variables Efforts to explain these correlational relationships have been hampered by the old causality dif ficulty—that association does not yield knowledge of cause. Interpretation of these statistical relationships requires access to other kinds of information. Evidence is gathered here from psychological research to support certain exp…
Problem and program linkage
This paper presents a case model for linkage of social service delivery programs with the prevention and detection of child abuse. The example of problem and problem linkage is given for the Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Program (EPSDT), the nation's largest preventive child health screening program designed to detect and treat early childhood medical and developmental conditions in indigent children. The screening activit…

Maternal Employment and Child Socialization Practices
This study presents the results of an intracultura I test of cross-cultural theory concerning the relationship between mothers' economic responsibilities, child rearing practices, and the development of socialized behavior. The relationship between these variables was examined through behavioral observations and self reports of 44 employed and 56 unemployed Western mothers of 7 and 10 year old girls and boys. Comparisons on the self-reported meas…
