The Management of Social Standing: Characterizing the Influence of HIV Stigma on HIV Talk and Testing Behavior in Philippine Key Populations Using a Grounded Theory Approach
We characterize the way human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) stigma hinders HIV conversations and testing. Using grounded theory principles, we analyzed in-depth interviews of the experiences of select Philippine key populations (groups with high HIV burden) and their families: 19 men who have sex with men (KPM), 16 transgender women (KPW), and 16 parents of KPM/W. Results show how KPM/W protect the state of being respected by others (management of…
Navigating monstrosity in methodologies: Reflexivity, positionalities, practices and strategies in monster research
This article explores “monstrosity” as both referring to diverse subjectivities transgressing socio-cultural normativities (from queer diversity to counter-ageist, -ableist and colonialist-Western paradigms) and a methodological tool that invites emotionality, and navigating positionalities throughout research encounters. We propose a monstrous dialogue as a tool for engaging with the monstrous qualities of the research process, and propose value…
Making sense of the queer: Methodological explorations and tensions in Filipino queer ageing research
To queer or not to queer? This question consumed my situatedness whilst inquiring into Filipino LGBTQ+ ageing. I offer to problematise and contextualise the queer in methodological elements of my research. I draw from queer phenomenology (Ahmed, 2006), on being critically queer (Butler, 1997), the power and the self (Foucault, 1994a), the core Filipino value of kapwa (shared identity) (Pe-pua & Protacio-Marcelino, 2000), and queer ethical moments…
Psychologists taking action for LGBT+ rights and well-being in the Philippines
This chapter describes the experiences of psychologists taking action for the rights and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in the country context of the Philippines. We reflect on our work as Filipino psychologists in various forms of advocacy and community engagement from 2010 to the present. Three case studies are presented: knowledge generation and dissemination, community organising within the psychology profess…
