  • Amy Finkelstein

Open Access•Jonathan Levin, Phumzile Hlongwa et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2012

Amy Finkelstein is the 2012 recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal from the American Economic Association. The core concerns of Amy's research program have been insurance markets and health care. She has addressed whether asymmetric information leads to inefficiencies in insurance markets, how large social insurance programs affect healthcare markets, and the determinants of innovation incentives in health care. We describe a number of Amy's key…

  • The Composition and Drawdown of Wealth in Retirement

    Open Access•James Poterba, James M Poterba et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Economic…•2011•Citada por: 5•Referências: 15

This paper presents evidence on the resources available to households as they enter retirement. It draws heavily on data collected by the Health and Retirement Study. We also consider the role of housing equity in the portfolios of retirement-age households and explore the exten…

Amy Finkelstein, James Poterba et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2004•Citada por: 18•Referências: 2

We find systematic relationships between ex post mortality and annuity characteristics, such as the timing of payments and the possibility of payments to the annuitant's estate. These patterns are consistent with the presence of asymmetric information. However, we find no evidence of substantive mortality differences by annuity size. These results suggest t…

  • Selection Effects in the United Kingdom Individual Annuities Market

    Open Access•Amy Finkelstein, James Poterba et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2002•Citada por: 3•Referências: 12

This paper explores adverse selection in the voluntary and compulsory individual annuity markets in the United Kingdom. Two empirical regularities support standard models of adverse selection. First, annuitants are longer-lived than non-annuitants. These mortality differences are more pronounced in the voluntary than in the compulsory annuity market. We estimate that the amount of adverse selection in the compulsory market is about one half of th…
