Caregivers for Older People
Human resources are essential to ensure the quality of long-term care. Yet, there are many things we do not know about the wellbeing, the working conditions, and the training of the caregivers for older people. Our work aims to fill some of the existing knowledge gaps by analyzing new data on the conditions of paid and unpaid caregivers in Latin America and the Caribbean. Experimental Evidence on the Long-Term Effects of a Youth Training Program
Identifying the right human capital investments for disadvantaged youths is a key policy concern worldwide, yet almost no rigorous evidence on the long-run effects of these investments exists outside the United States. The authors present a large-scale randomized controlled trial of a youth training program, estimating effects six years after random assignment from a representative sample of more than 3,200 youths. The intervention is prototypica…
Do Education and Health Conditions Matter in a Large Cash Transfer? Evidence from a Honduran Experiment
The article analyzes a new Honduran conditional cash transfer experiment (Bono 10,000) in which 150 poor villages (of 300) were treated. The per household transfer was much larger than an earlier experiment, but it yielded smaller short-run effects on school enrollment, child labor participation, and use of health services. One explanation is that Bono 10,000 did not apply conditions to all children: only one school-age child in participating hou…
Mexican Immigration And Self-Selection
This chapter uses data from the 2000 Mexican and U.S. Censuses to examine how the educational attainment of Mexican migrants to the United States compares to the educational attainment of those who remain in Mexico. The main finding is that low-skilled Mexicans are more likely than higher-skilled Mexicans to migrate to the United States. Mexican immigrants in the 2000 U.S. Census are older and significantly better-skilled than migrants in the 200…
