System dynamics modeling in support of community-based decision-making to reduce opioid overdose fatalities
Both New York State (NYS) and the United States have experienced heightened levels of opioid overdose death and prevalence of opioid use in recent decades. While evidence-based practices (EBPs) to address opioid use and prevent overdose fatalities exist, their reach in many communities remains limited. Persistent systems-level barriers must be overcome to support and sustain effective EBP implementation. This paper describes the Systems Think Tan…
Citywide park renovations and changes in perceived stress
In one of the first and largest studies on park quality improvement and mental health, park renovation near one's home was associated with decreased perceived stress among divorced/separated/widowed adults and middle-aged frequent park users. Frequent users of renovated parks experienced a larger drop in perceived stress than infrequent users, suggesting that high-quality parks may be an important pre-condition to the benefits of frequent park us…

Adolescent health behavior profiles and associations with mental health in a longitudinal study
To characterize adolescent health behavior profiles and associations with mental health, mixture models using data from two assessment points ( N = 201; Female = 53.7%, Time 1 m -age = 15.4 years; Time 2 m -age = 16.3 years) identified three distinct health behavior patterns. Profile 1 (27.9% of sample) had overall healthy behaviors (e.g. diet, physical activity, sleep), except nearly half tried e-cigarettes. Profile 2 (51.9%) had above average p…
Leveraging systems science and design thinking to advance implementation science
Many public health challenges are characterized by complexity that reflects the dynamic systems in which they occur. Such systems involve multiple interdependent factors, actors, and sectors that influence health, and are a primary driver of challenges of insufficient implementation, sustainment, and scale of evidence-based public health interventions. Implementation science frameworks have been developed to help embed evidence-based intervention…

Evaluating the outcomes and implementation determinants of interventions co-developed using human-centered design to promote healthy eating in restaurants
Background Restaurants are an emerging yet underutilized setting to facilitate healthier eating, particularly among minoritized communities that disproportionately experience health inequities. The present study aimed to examine outcomes from interventions co-developed using Human-Centered Design (HCD) in two Latin American restaurants, including sales of healthier menu items (HMI) and the consumer nutrition environment. In addition, we aimed to …
The association of park use and park perception with quality of life using structural equation modeling
Introduction The literature is limited on the impact of neighborhood parks on quality of life (QoL) and the mechanism linking them. Methods In this paper, we applied the structural equation model to data from a cross-sectional sample of 650 participants in low-income communities of New York City, we examined the associations of neighborhood park use vs. park perception and QoL, and whether these associations were mediated through self-reported pe…
Insights from a cross-sectional binational study comparing obesity among nonimmigrant Colombians in their home country and Colombian immigrants in the U.S
Colombian immigrants in NYC exhibit a higher prevalence of obesity compared to their nonimmigrant counterparts back home and sex strengthens this relationship. More obesity research is needed to understand the immigration experience of Colombians in the U.S. and the underlying mechanisms for sex difference. Public health action focused on women in Colombia and both Colombian men and women immigrants in the U.S. is warranted to avert the long-term…
Perceived neighborhood environment walkability and health-related quality of life among predominantly Black and Latino adults in New York City
Among NYC residents living in minoritized neighborhoods, mitigating negative aspects of the neighborhood environment may be more crucial than adding positive features in terms of HR-QoL.
