Cocaine-Exposed Toddler-Caregiver Dyads During Free Play at 24 Months
Some women continue to use cocaine during pregnancy, placing their fetus at risk for developmental problems. While gross problems are not evident after controlling for experimental flaws, subtle effects continue to be found. Social interactions of cocaine-exposed and nonexposed toddlers and their caregivers were assessed during a Free Play test to determine if psychobehavioral deficits were clinically observable. Risk factors were evaluated to as…
Parental opinion concerning school sexuality education in a culturally diverse population in the USA
This study aimed to expand upon previous research related to parental opinion concerning school sexuality education by sampling a culturally diverse, low-income population that has been traditionally under-represented in the literature. A total of 191 parents attending an urban community college completed a written questionnaire about what topics schools should teach their children about sexuality education. Independent variables, including count…
Cocaine-exposed infant behavior during Still-Face
Prenatal cocaine exposure and the role of gender were evaluated using risk factor analyses to determine whether 6-month-old cocaine-exposed male infants demonstrated greater disruptions in infant-caregiver socioemotional interactions during a Still-Face test. Overall, non-cocaine-exposed infants spent more time looking at toys, compared with cocaine-exposed infants; nonexposed female infants spent more time scanning the environment, compared with…
An ecological approach to development in children with prenatal drug exposure
Knowledge about the effects of prenatal drug exposure on early development is reviewed within an ecological framework. The intersecting influences on maternal and child behavior in the early caregiving environment are considered, and similarities reported for drug-exposed children and other high-risk groups are noted. Data from a sample of 90 dyads are used to explore the impact of maternal stress, social support, and depression on children's beh…
Maternal drug use and infant temperament
Mother-infant interaction in a multirisk population
The relationship among maternal and observer ratings of infant temperament, observer ratings of maternal responsiveness, and maternal drug abuse habits, was studied in a population facing multiple risk factors. Intensity of maternal drug abuse was found to be negatively related to maternal ratings of infant temperament, and ratings of temperament were positively related to maternal responsiveness. Implications for research and practice are explor…
