Towards a unified approach to inflectional and derivational predictions
In this paper, we build on previous work on predictability in morphology, where entropy-based techniques have first been introduced to measure predictability in inflection, and then extended to predictability of the citation form of derivatives, and we apply those techniques to explore variation in the predictability of derivatives from different inflected forms of their bases. As a case study, we choose a paradigmatic system that includes the pr…
Exploring the form of Italian diminutives
In this paper, we provide an extensive analysis of the formal features displayed by Italian diminutives (especially allomorphy) by using surface alternation patterns automatically extracted from a dataset of base-diminutive pairs. Applying the theoretical tools provided by Construction Morphology (CxM), we take alternation patterns as a proxy for paradigmatic relations and locate them into separate hierarchies, exploiting the mechanism of multipl…
Diet in high mediaeval Florence through stable isotope analysis of carbon, nitrogen and sulphur
Dietary pattern of a mediaeval Florence population reconstructed through stable carbon, nitrogen and sulphur isotopes. • Diet was mainly composed of C 3 cereals and terrestrial animal products. • The input of animal products was high compared to other published mediaeval Italian sites. In this paper, we aim to reconstruct the dietary habits of supposedly lower rank nobles or middle-class High Middle Ages individuals recovered from the cloister ar…
Flexemes in theory and in practice
This paper provides an in-depth investigation of the possibility of systematically using flexemes - i.e., lexical units characterized in terms of form, as opposed to lexemes, characterized in terms of meaning - to model overabundance - i.e., the availability of more than one form in the same paradigm cell. The starting point is a preliminary evaluation of the advantages and disadvantages of using flexemes to account for different overabundance ph…
Derivation predicting inflection
In this paper, we investigate the value of derivational information in predicting the inflectional behavior of lexemes. We focus on Latin, for which large-scale data on both inflection and derivation are easily available. We train boosting tree classifiers to predict the inflection class of verbs and nouns with and without different pieces of derivational information. For verbs, we also model inflectional behavior in a word-based fashion, trainin…
Diet and mobility in early medieval coastal Belgium
Towards a biologically available strontium isotope baseline for Ireland
Patterns of interpredictability and principal parts in Latin verb paradigms
This paper provides a fully word-based, abstractive analysis of predictability in Latin verb paradigms. After reviewing previous traditional and theoretically grounded accounts of Latin verb inflection, a procedure is outlined where the uncertainty in guessing the content of paradigm cells given knowledge of one or more inflected wordforms is measured by means of the information-theoretic notions of unary and n- ary implicative entropy, respectiv…
Temporal variations in Equus tooth isotope values (C,N,O) from the Middle Paleolithic site of Combe Grenal, France (ca. 150,000 to 50,000 BP)
Comparing bioapatite carbonate pre-treatments for isotopic measurements
Beaker people in Britain
Investigation of the ‘canopy effect’ in the isotope ecology of temperate woodlands
Technical note
It has become a widespread practice to convert δ 18 O p values measured in human and animal dental enamel to a corresponding value of δ 18 O w and compare these data with mapped δ 18 O w groundwater or meteoric water values to locate the region where the owner of the tooth lived during the formation of the enamel. Because this is a regression procedure, the errors associated with the predicted δ 18 O w values will depend critically on the correla…
Excavations at Upper Largie Quarry, Argyll & Bute, Scotland
Excavations were carried out intermittently between 1982 and 2005, by various excavators, in advance of quarrying activity at Upper Largie, Kilmartin Glen, Argyll & Bute. They revealed abundant evidence of prehistoric activity, dating from the Mesolithic to the Middle Bronze Age, on a fluvioglacial terrace overlooking the rest of the Glen, although some evidence was doubtless destroyed without record during a period of unmonitored quarrying. Seve…
