Rebuttal Analogy in Persuasive Messages
Research concerning rebuttal analogy suggests that communicators using this argument form are perceived unfavorably by message receivers. To further understand the effects of rebuttal analogy, the present investigation examines respondents' perceived likability of rebuttal analogy users, respondents' cognitive responses to the message, and their reported attitudes toward messages using rebuttal analogy. Emotional support is a central feature around which white, middle‐class adults organize their same‐sex friendships. The purpose of this study was to examine whether emotional support is accorded the same significance in the friendships of Asian‐ and African‐Americans. Rebuttal Analogy in Political Communication
Analogy in its various forms has been central to political philosophy, political reasoning, and political language for centuries. Yet research fails to account fully for its function in political discourse. This article identifies and describes a unique form of analogy- rebuttal analogy- used in the verbal sparring that characterizes modern mediated political discourse. This article, discusses the rhetorical characteristics of proverbs and their potential relationship to change in therapeutic communities. Published research concerning the rhetorical characteristics of proverbs is reviewed in relation to the potential role these factors play in promoting behavioral change.
