The Impacts of Multiracial Socialization and School Racial Composition on Multiracial Pride Among Biracial Adolescents
Multiracial adolescents navigate unique experiences within their schools and families that affect their ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development, such as the positive feelings they have toward being Multiracial (i.e., Multiracial pride). Despite the prevalent and growing number of Multiracial youth in the U.S., less attention has been given to their specific Multiracial identity development. The current study aimed to address gaps by examining wh…
Types of ethnic–racial identity belongingness predicting mental health and suicide ideation
The current study examined whether three types of ethnic–racial identity (ERI) belongingness (i.e., minoritized identity belongingness, White identity belongingness, and Multiracial identity belongingness) were associated with anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, and suicide ideation among Multiracial adolescents. We also explored race‐gender group differences between Latina‐White females, Latino‐White males, Black‐White females, and Black‐Whit…
Adverse Childhood Experiences and Justice Involvement
The current study examined whether adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) were associated with justice involvement among Black adolescents, and whether internal developmental assets (i.e., positive values, social competencies, positive identity, and commitment to learning) and external developmental assets (i.e., support, empowerment, boundaries and expectations, and constructive use of time) moderated these relations. Gender differences were also …
Racial Discrimination Predicting Sleep
Emerging adults of color face significant sleep disparities, yet we know less about underlying mechanisms. The goal of the current study was to investigate whether racial discrimination was associated with hours of sleep and sleep dissatisfaction. Further, we tested whether social media and television/digital media use moderated these associations. Participants included 464 emerging adult students of color (i.e., students who identified as Black/…

Validation of the Multiracial Youth Socialization Brief ( MY ‐Soc‐B) Scale with adolescents
The present study validates a brief version of the Multiracial Youth Socialization Scale, the MY-Soc-B, which assesses Multiracial youths' experiences of receiving messages from their caregivers about race and culture. Using a sample of 318 diverse Multiracial American adolescents (M age = 16.01; SD = 1.30), the original 62 items were reduced to 24 items via an examination of confirmatory factor analyses and conceptual clarity and fit of item con…
Centering Ethnic-Racial Identity in Education Framework
Research on youth ethnic-racial identity and socialization, primarily coming from the field of developmental psychology, offers insights for preparing teachers to create affirming classrooms for Black and Latine youth. On the other hand, research from the fields of teacher education and curriculum illuminates how school contexts, societal influences, and knowledge construction relate to identity and socialization. Synthesizing these two literatur…
Ethnic-Racial Identity and Alcohol Use Moderated by Family Factors among Diverse Emerging Adults
Excessive alcohol use is associated with adverse outcomes, underscoring the importance of identifying factors that may reduce alcohol use among diverse emerging adults, including ethnic-racial identity (ERI) and family factors. Limited work has examined factors that moderate the relations between ERI and alcohol use. The current study tested whether family factors (i.e., parent education and family history of alcohol problems) moderated the relat…
Positive and Negative Cultural Experiences Predicting GPA and Alcohol Use Among Racially Diverse Emerging Adults
When a parent dies
The death of a parent can have profound effects on child development. Yet, little is known about the individual and environmental processes that contribute to heterogeneity in child bereavement outcomes. A scoping review was conducted in samples of parentally bereaved children to identify key processes, synthesize results, and determine research gaps. This scoping review identified 23 studies (mainly from the United States), published between 199…

Associations between worry about mental and physical health and the use of face masks
Given the disproportionate impact of COVID-19, it is important to understand factors that may underlie Black American emerging adults' adherence to safety guidelines that could potentially reduce spread of illness and hospitalization. The current study examined how COVID-19 worry about mental health (CWMH) and COVID-19 worry about physical health (CWPH) predicted use of face masks, and whether perceived discrimination moderated these relations. T…
Processes Underlying Black American Emerging Adults' Mental Health
The present study examined whether mental health literacy (MHL) informed self-care and, in turn, mental health among Black emerging adults. Various components of ethnic-racial identity (ERI), including exploration, resolution, affirmation, and centrality, were tested as moderators of the associations between MHL and self-care. Participants were 166 Black American emerging adults ( Mage = 19.48, SD = .74). Findings indicated that among individuals…

Protective factors for adverse childhood experiences
Future studies should focus on addressing gaps in our understanding of what factors may buffer the influence of ACES on physical health outcomes and risky health behaviors and our understanding of family and nonfamily relationships and community and cultural protective factors on the ACE-health outcome relationship in adults. Additionally, research is needed that focuses on samples that are more gender diverse and from countries outside of North …
Longitudinal associations between well-being and academic achievement throughout the Covid-19 pandemic
First-generation and ethnic-racial minoritized college students experience greater academic disparities, but limited work has focused on intersectional experiences underlying academic achievement in higher education during the COVID-19 pandemic over time. The current longitudinal study examined the associations between various forms of well-being (i.e., emotional, psychological, and social) at T1 (Time 1; acute pandemic) predicting academic achie…
Skin Tone and Academic Readiness Among Young Mexican-Origin Children
Skin tone-based social stratification is an enduring part of the U.S. racial landscape. Despite literature finding that skin tone informs educational outcomes among adults, few studies have examined these processes in early childhood. The current study tested whether skin tone predicted Mexican-origin 5-year-old children's academic readiness (i.e., applied problems and letter-word identification) and whether relations were modified by ethnic-raci…

A Lifespan Model of Ethnic-Racial Identity
The current paper presents a lifespan model of ethnic-racial identity (ERI) from infancy into adulthood. We conceptualize that ethnic-racial priming during infancy prompts nascent awareness of ethnicity/race that becomes differentiated across childhood and through adulthood. We propose that the components of ERI that have been tested to date fall within five dimensions across the lifespan: ethnic-racial awareness, affiliation, attitudes, behavior…
