Human dispersals based on a global phylogenetic analysis of JC virus isolates of genotype B1-b
JC virus (JCV) is a useful marker for tracing human dispersal. Four genotypes of JCV (CY, SC, B1-b, and MY) are mainly distributed in Asia. The population history of humans carrying CY, SC, or MY has been studied in some detail, but that of humans carrying B1-b remains poorly understood. The objective of this study was to gain insights into the population history of Asians carrying B1-b. A neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree was reconstructed from…
Phylogenetic analysis of major African genotype (Af2) of JC virus
Both mtDNA and the Y chromosome have been used to investigate how modern humans dispersed within and out of Africa. This issue can also be studied using the JC virus (JCV) genotype, a novel marker with which to trace human migrations. Africa is mainly occupied by two genotypes of JCV, designated Af1 and Af2. Af1 is localized to central/western Africa, while Af2 is spread throughout Africa and in neighboring areas of Asia and Europe. It was recent…
Genetic diversity of JC virus in the Saami and the Finns
The JC virus (JCV) genotyping method was used to gain insights into the population history of the Saami and the Finns, both speaking Finno‐Ugric languages and living in close geographic proximity. Urine samples from Saami and Finns, collected in northern and southern Finland, respectively, were used to amplify a 610‐bp JCV‐DNA region containing abundant type‐specific mutations. Based on restriction site polymorphisms in the amplified fragments, w…
Genotypes of JC virus in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific
JC virus (JCV) genotyping is a novel method of tracing human migrations. In the present study, we used this method to gain insights into human expansions to the western Pacific. Using the whole genome approach, four genotypes of JCV (8A, 8B, 2E, and 7A) were previously detected in the island populations of the western Pacific. Using the same approach, we detected five genotypes (B1-a, B3-a, B3-b, SC-f, and SC-x) in Filipino populations (B3-b and …
Genetic diversity of JC virus in the modern Filipino population
The Philippines is generally believed to have been established by various peoples who migrated from neighboring areas. To gain new insights into the peopling of the Philippines, we used the JC virus (JCV) genotyping approach. We collected about 50 urine samples on each of two representative islands of the Philippines, Luzon and Cebu. DNA was extracted from the urine samples and used to amplify the 610‐bp region (IG region) of the viral genome. Fo…
Phylogenetic Analysis of JC Virus DNAs Detected in Ainus
Peopling of Myanmar as Demonstrated by Genotyping of Urinary JC Virus DNA
The genotyping of urinary JC virus (JCV) DNAs is a novel means of elucidating the origin of ethnic populations. We adopted this method to gain insights into the peopling of Myanmar. JCV genotype profiles at two sites of Myanmar, Yangon facing the Andaman Sea and Peinnebeen located in the central part of Myanmar, were reported previously. In this study, we elucidated JCV genotype profiles at three other sites of Myanmar: Chaungtha Beach facing the…
JC Virus Genotypes in Northwestern China
Genotyping of urinary JC virus (JCV) DNAs is a useful means of elucidating the origin of ethnic populations. We previously reported JCV genotypes in eastern China and Mongolia. To gain a comprehensive picture of JCV genotypes in China, we collected urine samples at three northwestern sites along the Silk Road: X'ian, Lanzhou and Urumqi. DNA was extracted from urine samples, and used to amplify the 610-base-pair region (IG region) of the viral gen…
Peopling of Japan as Revealed by Genotyping of Urinary JC Virus DNA
It has been shown that the typing of urinary JC polyomavirus (JCV) DNA offers a novel means of tracing human migrations. We used this approach to elucidate the colonization of the Japanese Archipelago. Approximately 1, 000 JCV DNA-positive urine samples were collected throughout the Japanese Archipelago, and used to amplify a 610-base-pair JCV DNA region (IG region). We determined about 100 IG sequences, from which a phylogenetic tree was constru…
