What is “conversational” about conversational technologies, products, and services? Insights from conversation analysis
“Conversational” technologies, products, and services are in the headlines more than ever. But what does it mean to be “conversational?” We address this question through the lens of six decades of empirical research in conversation analysis, which has identified and described the foundational structure and interactional machinery of human sociality. We consider not only how tacit notions of “conversationality” manifest in technologies, products, …
AI in situated action
Despite its elusiveness as a concept, ‘artificial intelligence’ (AI) is becoming part of everyday life, and a range of empirical and methodological approaches to social studies of AI now span many disciplines. This article reviews the scope of ethnomethodological and conversation analytic (EM/CA) approaches that treat AI as a phenomenon emerging in and through the situated organization of social interaction. Although this approach has been very i…
The Case for Open Conversation Analysis Data
As part of the growing “open science” movement, this article advocates integrating open data approaches into CA practices, drawing lessons from successful large-scale “big team” collaborations. The discussion begins by examining the history of data sharing in CA and its connection to evolving ideas and practices of open data. We explore software tools to support open CA data formats and share insights from developing an open CA data repository, t…
The conversational action test
Drawing on the “Voigt-Kampff Empathy Test”—a science fiction version of Turing’s famous thought experiment—we propose the Conversational Action Test (CAT): a new approach to evaluating conversational artificial intelligence (AI) voice agents. We compare social actions in a range of telephone service encounters where one party is an artificial conversational agent to a range of similar human-human calls. The CAT demonstrates a novel paradigm that …
Providing Hope or Assigning Blame? Healthism in Print Media Portrayals of Dementia Risk and Responsibility
Media representations often imply that dementia is preventable through lifestyle choices, potentially blaming individuals for their condition. Crawford's ideology of healthism outlines this form of responsibilisation. Our thematic discourse analysis of focus group discussions demonstrates how different stakeholder groups interpret print media messages differently, with prevention messaging that promotes health behaviours among the general populat…
Language policy as interactional practice in everyday public space
This article introduces the Corpus of Language Discrimination in Interaction (CLDI)-an open-access corpus of transcribed video data, capturing moments where individuals are policed in some way for the language they are speaking or otherwise endorsing while sharing public space (e.g. in stores, restaurants, parking lots, and parks). Despite having thus far largely evaded systematic inquiry, such interactions are illustrative of a particular genre …

Distributed agency in smart homecare interactions
The agent of action in Human-Computer Interaction is, as the hyphenated name of the field suggests, usually conceptualized as an contrastive binary of either human or computer. This study, informed by ethnomethodology and conversation analysis, instead describes the interactional achievement of distributed agency in a ‘smart homecare’ setting where a homecare worker and a disabled person coordinate shared activities using a virtual assistant. We …
Reminiscence respecified
Although discussion of reminiscence is prevalent in dementia care research, few studies have examined what actually occurs in these interactions, and how they are structured. This study examined how reminiscence activities are structured and negotiated in a care home environment. Informal one-to-one reminiscence interactions between people living with dementia and professional carers were transcribed from a larger video dataset. We used Conversat…
Keeping the conversation going
This article explores how partners keep the conversation going with people living with dementia (PLWD) when speaking about shared memories. Remembering is important for PLWD and their families. Indeed, memory loss is often equated with identity loss. In conversation, references to shared past events (co-rememberings) can occasion interactional trouble if memories cannot be mutually recalled. This article analyses partners' interactional practices…
Non-lexical vocalizations help novices learn joint embodied actions
Non-lexical vocalizations are key interactional resources for novices learning joint embodied actions. We use ethnomethodological video analysis of a beginners' partner dance workshop to explore how novices use non-lexical vocalizations to navigate unfamiliar dance movements together. These vocalizations often accompany apologies, accounts, and bodily actions that mark moments of trouble with coordination. We show how these non-lexical vocalizati…
A call to collect and analyse recordings of personal independence payment assessments
Recent UK policy changes enable claimants to record their Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessments, presenting an opportunity to study how they are produced interactionally. Disabled people have often reported feeling disempowered by PIP assessments, and these assessments are notoriously inaccurate – the vast majority are overturned in the claimants’ favour upon appeal. Given the quality of claimants’ lives often depends on their outcome, …
Can humans simulate talking like other humans? Comparing simulated clients to real customers in service inquiries
How authentic are inquiry calls made by simulated clients, or ‘mystery shoppers’, to service organizations, when compared to real callers? We analysed 48 simulated and 63 real inquiry calls to different veterinary practices in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The data were transcribed for conversation analysis, as well as coded for a variety of call categories including reason for the call, call outcome and turn design features. Analysis revealed …

Conversation analysis at the 'middle region' of public life
The conversational rollercoaster
How does talk work, and can we engage the public in a dialogue about the scientific study of talk? This article presents a history, critical evaluation and empirical illustration of the public science of talk. We chart the public ethos of conversation analysis that treats talk as an inherently public phenomenon and its transcribed recordings as public data. We examine the inherent contradictions that conversation analysis is simultaneously obscur…
An Appeal for a Methodological Fusion of Conversation Analysis and Experimental Psychology
Human social interaction is studied by researchers in conversation analysis (CA) and psychology, but the dominant methodologies within these two disciplines are very different. Analyzing methodological differences in relation to major developments in the philosophy of science, we suggest that a central difference is that psychologists tend to follow Popper’s falsificationism in dissociating the context of discovery and the context of justificatio…
Aboriginal Sunday
This is the twenty-third year in which a special day for Aboriginal Australians has been organised. Pastor Doug Nichols (now Sir Douglas Nichols) held the first Aboriginal Sunday at his small chapel in Fitzroy, Melbourne in 1957. His original intention was to publicise and aim for recognition of the prior-ownership by Aborigines of Australia.Aboriginal Sunday has now become National Aborigines Week (July 9-15), with Friday, July 13, designated Na…
