  • Effective communication of time–of–use electricity tariffs

    Open Access•Martina Barjaková, Cameron A Belton et al.•ARTICLE•Utilities Policy•2024•Referências: 1

Time-of-use (ToU) tariffs bring important benefits to consumers and society, but some individuals may find it harder to benefit from them than others. Communication around ToU tariffs needs to explain both benefits and challenges successfully. This article presents results from a pre-registered experiment with N = 1300 consumers in Ireland that pre-tested behaviourally-informed communications on ToU tariffs. Consumers were generally positive towa…

  • An experimental approach to measuring consumer preferences for water charges

    Open Access•Cameron A Belton, Deirdre A Robertson et al.•ARTICLE•Utilities Policy•2022•Citada por: 1•Referências: 6

Regulators acting on behalf of the public need to understand the interests of the people they represent. This paper describes a collaboration with the OECD and Scotland's water industry to deploy randomised behavioural experiments to investigate preferences for water charges. In a study conducted online (n = 500) and face-to-face (n = 100), participants rated price trajectories for acceptability, where the temporal pattern, presentation, magnitud…

  • Using decision aids to support self-isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic

    Peter D Lunn, Shane Timmon et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology & Health•2021

OBJECTIVE: Self-isolation is a vital element of efforts to contain COVID-19. We set out to test whether decision aids can support self-isolation. DESIGN: We conducted a pre-registered online experiment with a nationally representative sample (n = 500). Three stages tested: (i) whether decision trees help people to decide whether they need to self-isolate; (ii) whether an online planning tool increases people's confidence in their ability to self-…

  • It depends on how you ask

Open Access•Shane Timmon, Frances Mcginnity et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2021•Citada por: 3•Referências: 18

Objective Accurate measurement of compliance with COVID-19 guidance is important for public health policy and communications. Responses to surveys, however, are susceptible to psychological biases, including framing effects and social desirability. Our aim was to measure the effects of these biases on estimates of compliance with public health guidance (eg, hand-washing, social distancing). Design We conducted two online experiments (n=1800) and …

  • Using Behavioral Science to help fight the Coronavirus

    Open Access•Peter D Lunn, Cameron A Belton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Public…•2020

This rapid, narrative review summarizes useful evidence from behavioral science for fighting the COVID-19 outbreak. We undertook an extensive, multi-disciplinary literature search covering five issues: handwashing, face touching, self-isolation, public-spirited behavior, and responses to crisis communication. The search identified more than 100 relevant papers. We find effective behavioral interventions to increase handwashing, but not to reduce …

  • Motivating social distancing during the Covid-19 pandemic

    Open Access•Peter D Lunn, Shane Timmon et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2020•Citada por: 23•Referências: 15

Messages that invoke thoughts of infecting vulnerable people or large numbers of people can motivate social distancing and, hence, help to limit the spread of COVID-19. Stated public evaluations (obtained via focus groups or surveys) may underestimate the actual effectiveness of such emotional messages

  • Attention and novelty
