  • Kesksed looduslikud pühapaigad Eesti kagunurgas

    Open Access•Heiki Valk•ARTICLE•Mäetagused•2022•Referências: 2

Differently from most of Estonia, in the south-easternmost peripheries of the country – in the western border areas of Setomaa, as well as in the eastern and southern borderlands of Võrumaa – it is possible to distinguish sacred sites of regional meaning, i.e. those where popular religious assemblies related to offering took place on holidays. In the Orthodox Seto culture area where medieval way of life survived until the 1920s, such sites are re…

  • Finnic language islands in eastern Latvia

    Open Access•Heiki Valk•ARTICLE•Eesti ja soome-ugri keeleteaduse…•2021

This article discusses the archaeological background of the Leivu and Lutsi Finnic language islands. In contrast to the earlier research tradition, a hidden Finnic presence is suggested by the distribution area of Roman Iron Age tarand graves up to and including the Medieval Period when the presence of a Finnic population in northeastern Latvia (“the Chud in Ochela”) is noted in 1179/80. The Leivu language island west of Alūksne may be the last d…

  • Hunger, disease, and subtle lesions

    Open Access•A Morrone, Mari Tõrv et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021•Citada por: 5•Referências: 71

This paper reports a case study of 43 fetuses and perinates from four mass graves and two double burials from the cemetery of St. Jacob in Tartu (SE Estonia). The burials were dated to the 13th-15th centuries AD and located outside the cemetery walls, and likely can be linked to historically recorded episodes of famine and epidemic in medieval Livonia. All individuals belonged to the fetal and perinatal age categories, meaning they were either ab…

    Open Access•Heiki Valk•ARTICLE•Keel ja Kirjandus•2019

See lugu sai alguse 1993. aastal Setomaal Meremäe lähedal Uusvada külas. Siis toimunud kohtumine samas paigas sündinud Anne Linnupuu ehk Linnupuu Annega(1) (neiupõlvenimega Luuga, 1932–2009) andis mulle esimese vahetutel mälestustel põhineva kokkupuute Pekoga, luues pinna hilisemaks huviks ja edasisteks küsimisteks. Pärast pikemat vaheaega sai toona episoodiliseks jäänud lähenemine uue tõuke jutuajamistest Ermakova külast pärit Heino Keskkülaga […

  • Feeding the Crusades

    Rowena Y Banerjea, Monika Badura et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2019•Citada por: 4•Referências: 19

The integrated results of micromorphology, plant macrofossil, pollen, phytolith, and non-pollen palynomorph analyses represent an important study of two thirteenth-century Teutonic Order castles at Karksi (Livonia), and Elbląg (Prussia). The research examines deposits that formed during the period of active crusading. At Karksi, the investigation of a midden and of the organic-rich sediment beneath allows the diachronic use of this area to be und…

  • Gifts of the King. “Hanseatic” Bronze Bowls in Thirteenth-Century Estonia

    Open Access•Toomas Tamla, Heiki Valk•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2017

The Virumaa province in northeast Estonia is the area with the biggest concentration of ‘Hanseatic bowl’ finds in Europe. The finds originate mostly from deposits, often consisting of sets of numerous items. This article suggests a connection between these finds and the Danish crusade to Estonia in 1219, interpreting the bowls as the king’s gift to new subjects for their loyalty, also looking at a possible broader context, and drawing hypothetica…

  • Religious Transformations in the Middle Ages

  • Some Spatial and Temporal Aspects of Animal Utilisation in Viljandi, Medieval Livonia

    Open Access•Eve Rannamäe, Heiki Valk•ARTICLE•Archaeologia BALTICA•2013

Viljandi (Fellin), a small town in medieval Livonia, was founded in the second quarter of the 13th century, soon after the Estonian Crusades. The Estonians’ prehistoric hill-fort was replaced by a castle of the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order, the prehistoric settlement was abandoned, and the location for the new town was chosen on the site of a former field more suitable for fortification. In this paper, zooarchaeological material from thr…

  • Kirikumägi at Siksälä

    Open Access•Heiki Valk, Raili Allmäe•ARTICLE•Estonian Journal of Archaeology•2010•Citada por: 1•Referências: 3

The article discusses the excavation results of Late Iron Age cemetery on Kirikumägi at Siksälä, south-easternmost corner of Estonia. On the basis of analysis of cremated bones and the context of their location the presence of a new grave form â flat-ground cremation burials with unfurnished cremains poured or dispersed on burial plots deepened into the ground and later levelled â is suggested. The article also presents the results of analysis of…

  • Sacred Natural Places of Estonia

    Open Access•Heiki Valk•ARTICLE•Folklore Electronic Journal of…•2009•Citada por: 2

The article discusses the sacred natural places of Estonia from a regional perspective, outlining the two main regions -sea-oriented and inland. Regionality is most clearly expressed in the distribution of hiis sites -a phenomenon characteristic of sea-related areas. There are also other phenomena bound with specific areas, such as the distribution of natural healing places, farmstead offering places, natural offering places related to the cult o…

    Field diaries of Heiki Valk

  • On the Edition of Books in Antiquity

    Heiki Valk, H L M Van Der Valk•ARTICLE•Vigiliae Christianae•1957

Prof. H. I. Marrou has recently discussed the technique of editing. Though the testimonies, adduced by him, mainly concern the Christian Fathers, he also speaks about the editions of classical authors (Marrou 1.1.222-4). I should like to make a few observations here, because Prof. M. hopes that the testimonies of the classical authors will be studied anew in the light of the evidence adduced by him. If I understand Prof. M. well, he is inclined t…
