Open Access•Nicklas Neuman, Elin Lövestam et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2025

Taste and smell are of direct importance in most social interactions. Radical disruptions in these senses can, therefore, substantially disrupt sociality. This paper focuses on the experiences of a particular type of disruption: persistent chemosensory dysfunctions after COVID-19. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 30 patients undergoing treatment for chemosensory dysfunctions and analyzed the ways in which their experiences have influe…

  • Writing nutritionistically

Open Access•Karolin Bergman, Paulina Nowicka et al.•ARTICLE•Health An Interdisciplinary…•2022•Referências: 34

This article analyzes lay people’s use of nutritionistic discourse in written correspondence with the Swedish Food Agency, an authority responsible for dietary advice. Examining 60 food related written digital messages, we apply a critical discourse analysis to parse the lexical items and grammar people use when constructing “food” in scientific terms. The findings show how message writers place nutrients at the discursive center. Message writers…

  • A holistic approach

    Open Access•Karolin Bergman, Elin Lövestam et al.•ARTICLE•Sociology of Health & Illness•2020•Citada por: 3•Referências: 10

Dietary guidelines can be considered a pedagogical tool, designed to promote healthy eating at the population level. In this study, we critically examine the biopedagogies implicated in Sweden's official dietary guidelines. Published in 2015, these guidelines take a potentially innovative 'holistic approach' to food and eating, addressing the challenge of formulating dietary advice that considers both human health and environmental concerns. Appl…

  • Public Expressions of Trust and Distrust in Governmental Dietary Advice in Sweden

    Open Access•Karolin Bergman, K Eli et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2019•Citada por: 5•Referências: 42

We examine public trust and distrust in governmental food and nutrition authorities, through analyzing 727 letters sent electronically to the Swedish National Food Agency by lay people. Using thematic analysis, four themes were developed, defining public expressions of trust and distrust in official dietary advice. Trust was expressed as (a) seeking to confirm and clarify dietary advice or (b) seeking official arbitration between competing dietar…

  • The struggle to balance system and lifeworld

Elin Lövestam, Ylva Orrevall et al.•ARTICLE•Health Sociology Review•2016•Referências: 25

In this study, we explored Swedish dietitians’ experiences of a standardised Nutrition Care Process (NCP) and terminology from the perspective of Habermas’ concepts of system and lifeworld. Seven focus group discussions were analysed thematically. In this paper, we argue that dietitians seem to mainly connect the NCP with a system perspective, highlighting aspects such as professionalism, measurability and clarity of the patient record as helpful…

  • The power of language on patient‐centredness

Open Access•Elin Lövestam, Christina Fjellström et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2014•Citada por: 1•Referências: 10

In this paper, 30 notes written by S wedish dietitians in patient records are analysed, inspired by Critical Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis. Focusing on linguistic devices such as agency sources and evidential markers, we describe how patients are constantly referred to only in terms of the institutional patient role, or not referred to at all, through different techniques such as nominalization and passive verbs. The dietitians writ…
