Indigenous–non-Indigenous inequalities in oral health prevention among children and adolescents in Ecuador
Elucidating the role of unemployment in complex social inequalities in mental health
Women, migrants and those in manual occupations face barriers in the labor market and are more vulnerable to unemployment, which in turn may impact mental health and contributes to inequalities. Previous research has not considered the intertwinement of multiple inequalities. This study examined intersectional inequalities (intersecting gender, social class, and migration status) in poor mental health and the mediation role of unemployment in the…

Descriptive and regression analyses were applied to summarize the data and determine the magnitude of associations between independent variables and refraining from health care. Results showed 19.9% of participants refrained fr…
Humanitarian–development nexus approach to health systems strengthening in Sudan—a policy analysis
Background: With increasing conflict, fragility, and emergencies in many countries, health systems are being frequently weakened and require support and strengthening. To ensure the provision of lifesaving interventions while improving national health systems, the humanitarian-development nexus presents a policy solution to bridge the divide between humanitarian and development actors. Sudan represents an interesting case of the nexus of adoption…
Do health facility governing committees improve health system performance? An ecological study of Mainland Tanzania
INTRODUCTION: Accountability is crucial for improved functionality of health systems and can be ensured through community participation in health governance. To engage the community in the governance of the local health system, health facility governing committees (HFGCs) have been implemented in several low-income and middle-income countries including Tanzania. However, the effect of HFGCs on health system performance is not well studied. The ai…

Perceived discrimination was assessed by three variables: exposure to threat, humiliation treatment and et…
The transmission of social inequalities through economic difficulties and lifestyle factors on body mass index
Body mass index (BMI) has increased in Sweden, disproportionally for socially disadvantaged groups, including women, low-educated, and immigrants, who may also face economic constraints, physical inactivity, and poor-quality diets. Intersectional public health research aims to unravel such complex social inequalities, but the intersectional transmission of inequalities to BMI remains unexplored. We aimed to examine intersectional inequalities in …
A novel application of interrupted time series analysis to identify the impact of a primary health care reform on intersectional inequities in avoidable hospitalizations in the adult Swedish populatio…
Primary health care (PHC) systems are a crucial instrument for achieving equitable population health, but there is little evidence of how PHC reforms impact equities in population health. In 2010, Sweden implemented a reform that promoted marketization and privatization of PHC. The present study uses a novel integration of intersectionality-informed and evaluative epidemiological analytical frameworks to disentangle the impact of the 2010 Swedish…
The role of principled engagement in public health policymaking
BACKGROUND: The Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) requires countries to develop and implement multi-sectoral tobacco control strategies, including policies and legislation. Zambia, potentially faced by a rising problem of tobacco smoking, signed the FCTC in 2008 but has been unable to enact a tobacco policy for over a decade. OBJECTIVE: This study explores the role of 'principled engagement', a key element of the theoretical framewor…
Prevalence and change in social inequalities in physical activity before and during the Covid-19 pandemic in Sweden
Even though the Swedish population increased their levels of physical activity during the COVID-19 pandemic, the social inequalities that already existed in physical activity increased. Increase in institutional deliveries following the implementation of JSY needs to be analysed from an equity perspective. …
Anemia and malnutrition in indigenous children and adolescents of the Peruvian Amazon in a context of lead exposure
Half of the study population was found with anemia and stunting. Anemia was more prevalent in the 0- to 5-year age group and stunting in the 12- to 17-year group. The association between stunting and BLLs might be attributed to a direct effect of lead on human growth. Also, poor nutrition and other socioeconomic-related factors may contribute to the simultaneous existence of stunting and elevated BLLs

Inequitable impact of infection
BACKGROUND: The backdrop of the ubiquitous social inequalities has increasingly come into foreground in research on the COVID-19 pandemic, but the lack of high-quality population-based studies limits our understanding of the inequitable outcomes of the disease. The present study seeks to estimate social gradients in COVID-19 hospitalisations, intensive care admissions and death by education, income and country of birth, while taking into account …
The Devil’s Company’
Introduction: As a consequence of rising life expectancies, many families are no longer made up of one, but two simultaneously aging generations. This elderly parent-older adult child (OAC) dyad has emerged as a newly overserved yet little explored demographic phenomenon. Studies on this intergenerational aging dyad and the possible ramifications of when caregivers are simultaneously aging with care-receivers are scarce, especially in low and mid…

Understanding How Young People Do Activism
While social movement research employs 'tactical repertoire' to emphasize protest tactics directed at the state, literature on youth activism globally indicates that young people do politics outside the realm of formal political spheres. Youth activism on body politics in Latin America offers evidence that enhances conceptual tools intended for understanding how young people make claims and toward whom they make them. This article takes young act…

Prevalencia de anemia en escolares de la zona amazónica de Ecuador
Anemia is not a serious public health problem in the population studied. Nevertheless, the high prevalence of chronic undernutrition among the children points to the need to improve their diets. The lack of association between the prevalence of undernutrition and anemia could be due to low iron bioavailability or absorption rather than insufficient intake. Studies are needed to evaluate the customary diet of this population

El Movimiento de Salud de los Pueblos
We are moving away from the year 2000, and the goal of "health for all" remains distant. Economic globalization, which many consider to be one of the most serious threats to health, moves ahead, along with globalization of international health policies. A small number of powerful actors are in charge of setting the agenda, and they relegate to an inferior position the World Health Organization, which has moved away from the goal of "health for al…

‘If no one else stands up, you have to’
BACKGROUND: Access to water is a right and a social determinant of health that should be provided by the state. However, when it comes to access to water in rural areas, the current trend is for communities to arrange for the service themselves through locally run projects. This article presents a narrative of a single community's process of participation in implementing and running a water project in the village of El Triunfo, Guatemala. METHODS…
